delayed cord clamping is when the dr waits anywhere from 1-5 minutes after baby has been delivered before clamping and cutting the umbilical cord. There are several benefits to delayed cord clamping, as it allows the nutrient rich blood in the cord and placenta to flow back into baby. This increases blood volume, decreases incidence of iron deficiency anemia (linked to cognitive delays), increases their blood pressure to normal levels, and increases hematocrit and hemoglobin (important components of blood). Multiple studies have shown delayed cord clamping to be beneficial and the world health organization recommends waiting at least a minute before clamping.
