I'm heading to bed for the night but I have been thinking about an issue and thought maybe if I post it here I'll have some good opinions to read in the morning! Just looking for opinions on parenting style regarding guns in the home.

🔫🔫🔫

So I was raised in a very pro gun home and so was hubby. But the actual upbringing around them was different. I carry a concealed weapon (legally) and hubby does not but he intends to. For me it's a safety thing. I want to see the best in everyone but I know that can get you hurt. Never have I had to use my gun and my goal is to get through life and never have to use it. My parents were the same. My entire life it was made clear to me that we had guns in our home. When I was probably about 10 my dad started taking me to the shooting range. We went pretty frequently. When I was 16 my dad sat me down and explained how to get into his gun safe in an emergency. Because of years of shooting with him I already knew all about the safety of and how to load the guns. It was always made very clear to me that these were for emergency situations only. My parents always made sure to make me think about the seriousness of using a gun as well as even made me talk about how horrible I would feel if I did ever shoot someone because they wanted me to understand it was not to be taken lightly. As said I have never had to use my weapon nor have either of my parents.

Being raised that way I always respected guns. I wouldn't say that I liked them or feared them but I understood why they were important and the serious responsibility a person takes on by owning a gun. I get upset when I see people being careless with their guns or waving them around like a toy. It makes people think it's OK to just have just because, like an accessory and I don't think that is ok.

😠😠

Now hubby and I want to continue and teach our daughter about them. But I have some conditions and concerns.

💪

1. we will never have toy guns in our home nor will we condone playing with toy guns. They are not toys and I think it's not a very good idea to let a kid play with a toy gun then still try to convince them a real gun isn't a toy. I just think guns are to serious of a topic.

2. There will be no shooting anything until my daughter attends a weapons safety course (my parents put me and my sisters through it too)

3. No shooting with anyone but mom or dad at the range. no exceptions.

4. If my daughter is being unresponsible as she's older then there will be absolutely no guns. I don't intend to risk anyone's life because an irresponsible teenager thought a gun was cool.

5. My daughter will not know the location of or how to access my gun safe or her father's. (maybe at an older age I could show her for emergencies like my parents did but idk when probably 17)

6. You will be required to take a self defense class. I want a gun to be considered the absolute last option and even then only to be considered in the most serious life or death situations. I want you to be able to help yourself without having to think about the gun.

✋✋✋

OK so I know that was long lol. and I know not everyone is going to agree with wanting weapons in our home (they are always properly locked up and legally kept) but it's very important to us. Obviously I don't want my 5 year old running around school talking about guns but I also want to make them known at a young enough age that it can be taught as normal so when she is older it's not something that she gets to focused on.

😥

any other pro gun families? How do you handle this or plan too?

Obviously we don't have to have this figured out for a few years but it's on my mind now lol

Seems like you are the epitome of a "responsible gun owner" and you were raised in a line of them. It sounds like you've thought it out very well. I am personally up on the fence about gun ownership, but I was raised in a home where guns were not acceptable. Anyways, I enjoyed reading your perspective on the matter. If I do chose to ever buy a gun, I will surely be taking many of your points!

Sounds about right. I think owning a gun is perfectly fine, but like you said, not something to be taken lightly. I think you'll do great raising your kids with a healthy attitude about it. I only semi-disagree about toy guns, I'm not so strict there. I don't like toys that look like real guns, but things like nerf shooters and water guns are ok by me. But obviously it would be up to parents to explain the difference, which I do actually discuss with my kids even though we don't own any guns at the moment.

I wasn't raised around guns but I am pro gun . I want to apply for a CCW but I live in Los Angeles & to be honest it's hard to get one unless you are bank owner , some type of judge , lawyer , etc . My S/O is an police officer so he always carries his gun . Everywhere we go he has it on his ankle now . He plans on taking me to the shooting range after baby comes . We don't live together yet but he explained to me that when he comes he will have gun safety in the house . He says by law he has too especially with the kids being here . I have a 9yr old son & we do not allow him to play with toy guns . (It has a lot to do with us living in South Central La & him being a black male) So me or my S/O don't allow toy guns . But as my kids get older we plan on teaching them the importance of gun safety . But I agree with you . Gun safety is important & I believe in being armed . But of course I want us to learn some other self defense techniques .
