So I've been summoned for jury duty a couple weeks before my due date. I tried to get excused from it but they denied me being excused. Has this ever happened to anybody?
Well, if you think you can call and that would make a difference, then yeah go for it! I'm just saying to not worry if they will not excuse you, because it is unlikely counsel will choose you.
I think I may give them a call on Monday! Do I just explain to them that I'm pregnant and what not? @mamalamadingdong
And if you make it into questioning, make sure to add in somehow that you are pregnant because if you are in a jury box, they may not be able to see your belly lol.
Wow, that's awesome you guys can do that online! I live in a big city and they make us call and come into see the judge, no ifs ands or buts, lol! But like I said, go in... I'd be willing to make a large bet that you won't be selected.
@mamalamadingdong, well I got summoned the month before for appearing for jury duty beginning of July, so I postponed it online. Then I got my new summons and it says I have to reply online within 10 days so I did it. And I put in for hardship because I can't miss any work and I put also that my summon date is a couple weeks before my due date. But I just got an email from the courts saying that my excuse has been denied and that I still have to show up! Don't get me wrong i do want to go to jury duty because I find stuff like that interesting. But I don't want to be the pregnant lady all emotional and what not!
Also, @red1996 the judge didn't offer you a postponement? I'm surprised! I can understand them not issuing a dismissal, but a nice judge would ask you if you'd like to postpone.
It's random and drawn from a variety of sources. If you are registered with any government program, like having a valid drivers license, voter registration, etc. Some people can avoid it if you stay off the grid, but not very often. @blessedw7
How does someone get chosen for jury duty? Just curious because I never have.
Don't lie, don't make anything up. Honestly, that pisses me off when people try to cheat the system. It's our civil duty, we all have to do it. I love being summoned and actually am expecting to be soon, since I had to postpone last time. Then again, I'm in law school and I enjoy that stuff lol. Anyways, I just wanted to clarify to you that you will not likely be selected because you are pregnant. It is kind of an unspoken rule amongst prosecution and defense that neither side will take the gamble of choosing an emotional pregnant woman lol. Yeah, it sounds discriminatory, but that's what the whole selection process is. Each side wants a jury that will be partial to them. An emotional preggo is a wildcard- not a risk that many will take. It's a game of strategy. Counsel gets a number of preemptory challenges and this is when they would excuse you with no explanation.
Don't worry, just go through summons. When Voir dire begins, neither side will choose you, lol. Trust me.
That's what I used to say.
Say you know whoever is being tried.
@kmally, sorry I'm going into labor today can't come in!
Lol call the day of and say you're having contractions 😂😂
In most states if you don't show up you will be fined in contempt of court.
@phasion, tell me about it! I literally don't know what to do @expecting2015 I would but I know they fine you if you don't show up!
