the nurses seem OK with how I have been feeding my son but I have to ask is it bad that he is 2 days old and I only feed him when he wakes up and wants to feed rather then feeding him every two hours?

no I did the same thing even though the nurses told me to wake him up to eat. I think it's better for them to eat when they're ready. my son would only eat when he wanted to anyway

Yeah do what's best for you and your baby. I don't understand why anyone would wake a baby up to eat once they get hungry they will let you know

My pediatrician told me at my daughters one week appointment to wake her every 2-3 hours for the first two weeks to feed. He told me that the reason is because their stomach still aren't fully functioning it. And by feeding them every 2 to 3 hours a get them on the right track.

My nurses told me to feed him based on his needs so whenever he wakes up. My baby feeds between every 2-4 hrs. He has gained weight like a champ. I've never woken him up to feed him. However, he was a full term babe.

I see a breastfeeding peer counselor at the wic office and there are breastfeeding classes there and they've told us to feed based on your babys needs not based on a schedule because every baby is different. she said a lot of women get discouraged and stop breastfeeding because the baby eats more often than doctors say they should so they think they aren't producing enough to feed baby when really your baby is just hungrier than what they say it should be.

In the very beginning, waking them up to eat helps prevent jaundice (by clearing all the yucky stuff out of their bellies with frequent eating and then pooping) and encourages critical weight gain. Newborns are so sleepy, sometimes they sleep when they really need to be eating. But once your doctor says they are gaining well, you can start feeding kn demand. I know it seems counterintuitive to wake a baby but in the beginning they can't regulate themselves and need your help! Good luck! Those early weeks and frequent feedings are tough :)
