So my breast pump is not emptying me like it should. I can still hand express milk. Any suggestions?
sounds like your pumping amount is normal. breastfeeding definitely is not easy. maybe sooner other mommas ands educated people can help you. I'm in a group on fb called Breastfeeding, the struggles we've overcome. you should join it.
@paisleysmama0216, I don't get much out by hand expressing. @jomommaclark I've used the shield, it works but he falls asleep. he's 2 weeks old and in the hospital they didn't give me a pump and I didn't know I could rent one, so I got off to a bad start. if I don't pump often I get an ounce, maybe and ounce and a half out of each boob. I've upped my pumping and now I'm getting less than an ounce. I'm really discouraged and I feel like the damage is already done from not pumping enough. I'm just gonna keep trying to pump...but I don't think it's gonna do me good.
I exclusively pump and I got about 3 oz every time I pumped for the first month (every 2 hours) then I started getting anywhere from 3-8oz a pump session...have you tried hand expressing until you get a let down then using the pump?
@paisleysmama0216, @jomommaclark the flanges are definitely too small, but I can't get him to latch for a full feeding. my nipple is too small and my breast is too big so I'm pumping. I checked all the parts and everything seems to be fine. I checked the membranes also and they aren't clogged or anything. I cleaned everything out too.
Like @jomommaclark said a pump isn't as efficient as baby BUT if you're not getting anything there may be something wrong with the pump..maybe the membranes need changed or you don't have a good connection with the lines or the auction of the pump is going bad ?
also when food you last change your membranes? did you double check tubing to make sure it was all the way on?
@paisleysmama0216, it's not painful at all. I turn it all the way up. I have the standard ones that came with it. I think they are 20mm, I thought they were pretty small, but they have been working until now. Do you know if they have bigger ones for the medela?
You can definitely build your supply back up you just gotta keep feeding on demand and pumping make sure you stay hydrated and try eating oatmeal, taking fenugreek, and drinking mothers milk tea if you're not already.
