Check the electrical sockets for scratches and damage...also here in NC the apartments must me cleared by an exterminator company for that stuff so you can ask if they had it checked and if they tell you yes ask to see the paperwork

While just looking at apartments, you probably won't be able to tell. However, most apartments require frequent spraying to keep bugs and mice away. I wouldn't stress. As long as you get a good apartment, if you run into any issues, you can just call the landlord and they can make a special trip out to spray just your apartment.

@hayleymarie, I'm in Colorado & I don't think they Have laws like that. I thought of just asking but I figured they could always just lie... scratches and damage of electrical sockets? which causes that?

Bedbugs and roaches both hide in the electrical sockets because of the warmth....

@jennatess, okay how would I nicely go about asking them how they deal with issues like that? the rental market in Colorado is crazy due to the legalized marijuana so everything is full or way over priced. we've been looking for like a month and barely found some to actually look at.

@bsummers, they will ALL have the pest control rules and regulations printed in their leasing contract that you will sign. While you're touring, just say, "and what about pest control? How often is the property sprayed for bugs and rodents? If I see something that seems out of the ordinary, how and who do I contact to have them come in and spray our unit specifically?" . The property manager will be happy to tell you, and probably more happy you even asked! But, if you don't bring it up, once you sit down to fill out the leading agreement, they will cover that part for you (or again.). Remember- they want to keep their properties as clean as possible. An infestation of bed bugs, or roaches looks terrible on their behalf, so, they will do whatever it takes to avoid that issue.(:

I'm not sure when I was apartment searching my dad went with me (worked in the apartment industry) and showed me that if most of the outlets are scratched up and damaged there's probably bugs...like if it's just one or tow outlets that were scratched a little it was probably because of someone plugging in and unplugging stuff a lot at that certain outlet...like Jenn said ask about their pest control policies and what not if its a good complex they will probably take care of bugs quickly because they won't want their reputation on the line
