@danamarie, is exactly right. just clean it often and wear gloves. I don't think you really need the face protection but hey its not gonna hurt and just wash your hands after I was looking forward to getting out of litter box duty. but that did not happen so I clean mine 2 times a day

This is because my fiancé lives in Boston and I'm in SF. We had to find a way to make it work :)

So I talked to my vet and doc and they said just the toxoplasmosis (from the poop) is potentially harmful. That's why if you don't let the cat go outside and eat dead animals and clean it every 12 hours there is almost no risk of you getting it. Additionally since I've lived with mine for 10+ years I could have an immunity to it already due to exposure if they did. That said it's a kitten so do you know if it's been in the house the whole time? That would stop it from having it 100%!

As long as you clean it within 24 hours - the parasite isn't active yet so you can't contract it. So if you have to YES cover up then wash after. Just do it as often as you can and you won't have to worry. Also you could get the cat tested prior to find out if it's an issue. Any chance of getting it done?

I honestly wouldn't do it period just too much risk. Especially you being in the first trimester. Having the kitten isn't a prob but the litter box is a huge Nono. My fiancé does it, I won't go anywhere near it. Even the litter dust is bad.

That's what I do when my husband isn't home. I wear a face mask and gloves and wash my hands afterwards and then go and shower.
