so I bought a car seat at this consignment sale in my area. it doesn't have a base but was only $18. how bad is it to not have a base? should I buy another one? it was only $18 so it wouldn't be a big loss and we could still use it as one of this baby seats to rock in in the house.

oh ok I assumed that you couldn't buy them seperate or that it would at least be hard to find. I'll look for one.

@maxx, you can buy a base separately or a new car seat but you need that base it's where the protection comes from

@kingryansmom, they do make car seats without bases; the car seat just stays in the car at all times you can't detach it to bring it in the house or store for example.

yes that's a convertible car seat if she's talking about an infant car seat it needs a base. thanks @14jmartins

@kingryansmom, no disrespect but an infant car seat does not need a base.. They do make some that do not even come with bases. Is it more convenient with a base, and safer of course it is. All I'm saying is that, some do not require you to have the base.

@maxx, @14jmartins is right. Go online and Google your car seat manual. You can use a regular seat belt for most infant carriers without a base. What you should be concerned about is the expiration date on it. Just make sure it has atleast one more year on it :)
