I see so many mommies giving their babies rice cereal to sleep even though it's not recommended? Why?

My little brother was put on rice in his bottle by his pediatrician because he was born at 10.3 and needed to eat more. It's different for everyone. I do understand that you were originally responding to why people do it to help babies sleep but even that could be more than just being lazy. 😊 everyone's different

too each their own and yeah it did sound a little rude, most mothers do it too help their child as they feel is necessary or right but there are the few "mother's" just like any other issues mothers face who do try to take the easy way out but like I said too each their own @emilyyy96___

@bree961, and that's on them! I literally wasn't even trying to be rude and yeah that first comment of mine kinda seemed like it, but most people do it just to make the baby sleep (or so they say). you can agree or disagree and it's not going to hurt my feelings. I just don't find it right because you're exhausted.

COMMON SENSE ! but you're making it seem like its worse than anything in the world when in fact it can't be that bad because doctors wouldn't recommend it at all for any medical reason before 4 months if it puts a newborn at THAT much risk. Once again youre acting like you know everything. you got the info off the internet. it clearly can't be bad that much because plenty of moms do it and have multiple children and are still doing it. so come on be real.

Some moms are working moms, they can use an extra hour or two of sleep. Some people don't have it as good as others do. The ability to stay home all day long with nothing else to care for except your child or children. I absolutely never did it with my first even though he was on formula exclusively, I could have but I didn't have anything else to do. I'm a stay at home mom, but this second time I did try it. It didn't work but I tried lol. Why? Because I also have a 4 year old who needs me from 8am-9pm. I tried it when he was 1 month, didn't work. He still woke up like he normally did. I was desperate though, I was super tired and I couldn't just take a nap because my 4 year old doesn't nap. Honestly though, babies aren't made of butter or something lol. All these facts and things doctors "recommend" aren't always what is right. Seriously your baby will not die from drinking some water as a newborn lol. We need to lighten up and stop being so picky with our kids and following "pediatricians" orders, follow your mother instincts instead, if YOU feel that your child will be fine giving him some water for example, do it! Doctors all say different things!! At the hospital one doctor told me to give my baby breastmilk to help with his jaundice, turns out its actually formula what makes jaundice go away and another doctor told me that (same hospital). Few days later his first pediatrician gave me a chart on how much infants tylenol for his weight bla bla, then I changed pediatricians and he told me NOT to give him infants tylenol until after 3 months. Guess what, I gave him tylenol when he got a horrible cold at 1 month old. Yes he is fine and alive because I dont listen to doctors crap, I do what I feel won't hurt my babies.

@iloveni0820, I'm not trying to be mean at all, just sharing facts. my daughter suffers from several medical problems so I'm always meeting with specialists, hospitals, pediatricians, etc.

what you do with your own babies is on you, but I'm just letting it be known what the safest is.

Ответить

emilyyy96___

EmilyМама дочки (1 год), беременна (29 нед.)

@iloveni0820, they usually do it last resort. with my daughter they gave her medicine, tried putting her on formula, etc. nothing worked for her so at 4 months her pediatrician said put her on the rice cereal, but not in a bottle. It's not recommended unless your baby has SEVERE reflux. my daughter still has it at 15 months and I have to sit her up several times at night cause she gets such bad heartburn and acid reflux, same thing I suffer from! they have different ways they do things with every baby, doesn't always mean it's the safest. At 10 weeks old my baby was unresponsive due to an allergy to formula, so that's why it never worked for me so I breastfed for 13 months until she weaned herself.

Every mother who says they put it in their babies bottle says it helps them sleep. you on the other haven't even tried it so just because you're getting from the internet doesn't mean its entirely true. My daughter did a lot better on the rice cereal bottles than reg formula. And you're acting like it kills the baby. if that's the case they wouldn't recommend it all no matter what the situation. Like I said my daughter was ONE month old when she first starting getting it. and now she's a healthy beautiful SEVEN month old and still growing perfectly.

Ответить

@emilyyy96___, when I was told to put it in EVERY bottle for my ONE MONTH old it did help her sleep a lot better. Its not a myth it actually works. Now I don't give it to her at all in a bottle because she eats baby food. So try not to sound like a "know it all" cause it seems like you're getting info from the internet. and rice cereal is a flake and when you mix it with the milk (not a lot of rice cereal) its absorbed in the milk. its almost impossible to choke on rice.

@emilyyy96___, my daughters doctor told me to put rice cereal in her bottle at 1 month. my daughter had bad acid reflux and the milk was to thin to keep it down. I don't believe parents do it to be lazy but more for the help. Most parents are really busy and if they can find a way to get a hour or two more to sleep then they can do it. Rice cereal can not really harm a newborn in a significant way at all. if that was the case they wouldn't have in stores the way they do.

@babynova12.5.14, well I'm not bashing, It's just unsafe for the baby. unless your pediatrician clearly says you need to put this in the baby's bottle cause they won't stop puking (not just spit up) then I would never ever suggest it. I saw a post on here earlier about how long her baby should sleep after giving him/her bottle of formula with rice cereal. it's usually last resort for drs to do that. they usually try changing formula, medications, and other stuff first. I went through it with my own daughter but never once did he say put this in her bottle. at 4 months he told me to feed her one tablespoon of it mixed with breastmilk AFTER she breastfeed to block the milk from coming back up because the bottom of her throat doesn't close all the way.

There's so many health concerns.. choking, obesity, inhaling pieces of the rice, constipation and other digestive problems, etc. I don't see how any good pediatrician would be okay with giving your baby something like that as a newborn. With a spoon at 4+months only. I know tons of parents who won't use baby cereal because of how "unnatural" it is.

Ответить

@babynova12.5.14, that's why I put "IMO" which means in my opnion, which I'm entitled to. I have never once heard for a dr to say yes and put rice in their bottles. at 4 months drs give parents the go to try it, or prescribe it to them for various reseasons (acid reflux, weight gain, etc) but I don't think any newborns or babies below 4 months should get it, let alone through a bottle used as a thickener just so they can sleep. I went through my senior year of high school and worked with my oldest daughter and I never once did that, no matter how tired I was. people sell all kinds of stuff. read the label on the Gerber cereal, it'll say 6+ months.

Ответить

babynova12.5.14

don't judge people saying there lazy... some doctors do say to do it.. not for sleep but to put on weight. and once they reach 4+ months they can have it. so don't go around saying mothers on here are lazy. if rice or oatmeal was that bad why would Gerber and every store out there sell it? @emilyyy96___ I'm just saying don't assume people are lazy. a lot of moms on here work there ass off.

Ответить

emilyyy96___

IMO: it's cause they're being lazy and they're tired and want their baby to sleep. my daughter nursed every single 30 mins the first 2 months and I was extremely tired but I did it. rice is a filler and those babies are just learning how to digest milk or formula let alone rice which is making them constipated.
