National Horror Movie Day is celebrated annually on October 23rd. The day was founded by Black Vortex Cinema in 2023 to promote the enjoyment of horror films. The date was chosen to honor the birthday of horror director Sam Raimi.

🎞️Le Manoir du Diable :

Georges Méliès' 1896 short film Le Manoir du Diable, also known as The Haunted Castle or The House of the Devil, is widely considered the first horror movie. The 3-minute silent film features a mischievous devil in a medieval castle, and uses vaudeville acts and trick shots instead of a story. Méliès, a pioneer of narrative movies, used special effects and experimented with horror, fantasy, and science fiction genres.

Film historians argue that this is the first film depiction of a vampire. While director and actor credited his character as Mephistopheles, a legendary demon, many horror elements associated with vampires exist in the film and are exhibited by the character. These include the transformation from bat to human form, conjuring a harem of demonic brides, apparent mesmeric control, and the ability to conjure humans and creatures to serve him. Many of vampire stereotypes featured here remained tropes in early films about vampires.
