Mamas who’s kids have been in speech therapy, what is this whole process like? We just had my son’s 2 year check up and he’s only saying about 10-15 words and his doctor says he should be saying about 30 by now so she’s sending in a referral. I dont know anything about this. 😂 What all do they do (besides obviously getting them to speak)?

My daughter had it when she started pre-k it is a bit of a process she was evaluated to see where she was at and she was behind in her words and sentences she also struggled pronouncing her “L”s. It took alittle while for speech to start, she wouldn’t do anything for us be did everything for her speech teacher 😅. she graduated after at year of it and it’s amazing the difference. They did a lot of games and sounds in her sessions which seemed to make it fun for her.

I’ve had 2 kids in therapy and K has a speech disability.

Therapy this young should all be play based and it’s not going to look like “work” or drills of sounds. Lots of play, toys, books, games, art. All the fun stuff! Sign language is used by a lot of SLPs as it helps teach how to communicate and reduces frustration of not being able to communicate.

Little lady was in speech for 4 months but she refused to talk during speech so we discontinued services. We’re hoping to get her into the preschool that feeds directly into our elementary schools so she’ll have access to a SLP daily if there are any concerns with her speech at that time. We are currently less worried about amount of words and more concerned about motor-planning as she had issues with that physically and that’s the area of K’s speech disability.

😂 Oh gosh, refusing to speak during it sounds exactly like something my son will do. When we ask him to repeat something we say, he either shakes his head no or just screams at us. He’s extremely stubborn!

But anyways, it sounds like it will be fun for him if he’ll cooperate!

@llamapantaloons, haha yeah she’s just super shy! She was in OT and PT for a year and didn’t make hardly a noise for them either. Oh well!

Good luck, hopefully he has fun!

K started speech at 2 and it took a full year for him to catch up to age appropriate and then another 2.5 years of speech because of his disability. K loved going though and worked super hard!

Editing to add: little lady was on the wait list for 6 months. Wait lists seem to be crazy long every where.

@humblewarriormama, Yeah, I’ve heard the wait lists can be crazy! And that’s great that he worked hard at it at least!

My daughter has been in it since 2. The process was fine it was the waiting game that took forever to actually get her in it.
Games, books, sign language and pointing is what i remembered from the therapy.

Yeah, I’ve heard stories of people being on the wait list for almost a year to get into speech therapy. But we’ll see. We’re in a fairly small area, sooooo maaaaaybe it wont take as long hopefully. Our doctor didnt say anything about that, just they’ll call me to set it up eventually. 🤷🏻‍♀️

But games and books and stuff sound fun! Hopefully little Mr. StubbornPants will like it! 😂

@llamapantaloons, I had to do all the setting up the doctor did nothing.
It’s all play based at his age basically if that helps.
My daughter had her fair share of tantrums in it and still does 😂

@sourpatchkids, We’ll see if my doctor sets has them call me like she’s supposed to! And haha, I believe it! I’m sure my son will have his fair share of tantrums in it too! Hell, he was screaming his head off just while the nurse was trying to measure him this morning. 😅
