For those that have children fully potty trained: how long did it take, particularly for night time? What are some things you did that worked? And did you ever put them back in a diaper/pull up or did you just toss them and never looked back?

My daughter was potty trained at 3 but had a regression at 3.5 when her brother was born. I stopped using night pull-ups when she was waking up dry several weeks in a row. But I think we had to use pull-ups during her regression or maybe I just threatened her with them 😩 My son was so easy. He was potty trained at 2.5 and we stopped using all pull-ups when he turned 3. Even at night. Every kid is different. I had a different experience with each of them.

My youngest has been fully potty trained for about a year? He potty trained himself randomly one day around 2.5 years old. He’s never had a night time accident the entire time.

My oldest was closer to 3.5 before we considered him pee potty trained, but he still will wet the bed at night. It’s not regularly, but once a month, once every other month? He does have sensory struggles though so that could be part of it. Like a lot of others are saying, over night is developmental and there is quite the range for when it’s normal to not have any accidents. We have mattress covers and just treat the situation as an “it is what it is” thing.

We have pee pads and waterproof mattress protectors. We will still take them pee before we go to bed if they drank late. We also do no drinks after dinner and pee before they go to sleep for the night.

Night time potty training is developmental. It’s not something they can be “trained” for. You can encourage success by cutting liquids after dinner. Several potty trips before bed etc. but they have to developmentally be ready and aware of the fact they need to go whole unconscious. Not particularly a skill you can teach. That’s why they make night time underwear to a decent size as some kids take way longer to grasp it.

I always believed that. But now my son is about to be 9 and still wetting the bed. I am wondering if he’s now too comfortable/lazy as we tried underwear last night and he woke me up saying “I peed on the bed. I was too tired to go to the bathroom.” I was like 😳maybe I need to be more consistent and tough with it.

The night before he did pee just a little in his underwear but it was progress so I was surprised he did this.

@mybabybear, try the no liquids and several trips to the bathroom. If you think he’s doing it on purpose offer a reward. 5 nights accident free gets x reward. Something he will want. Then if it’s still happening then you’ll know it’s just he isn’t 100% there. It’s not unheard of for a 9-11 year old to wet the bed. I mean it’s not super common but not unheard of

@whereswaldo, thank you for the encouragement. I will definitely be doing a reward system!
