My poor kiddo catch a break 😭 got sent home from school because her eye was bothering her and has some discharge coming from it. Fast forward to this evening and she’s complained about it hurting, it’s swelled up, super red, and we have to keep cleaning it because of all the junk. Now her other one is pretty red too with a little discharge here and there but she hasn’t mentioned it bothering her yet. I’m pretty sure it’s pink eye because that’s going around in her school but her Pedi is closed on Friday’s and the other office in town was booked out. Should I have her seen at urgent care tomorrow or wait until Monday to see her Pedi?

With all the RSV, flu, and Covid going around right now, I definitely wouldn’t be visiting urgent care. If you’re concerned wait til Monday to see your doctor. Pinkeye is not urgent.

Pinkeye is super common and very minor. Most of the time it’s caused by a virus which means there’s nothing you can do for it other than let it run its course. That’s very likely what you’re dealing with. You can make an appt with your pedi if you want to so you can get antibiotic ointment just in case it’s bacterial, but since it’s been going around at school it’s almost certain that it’s viral. I wouldn’t take my kids to the doctor for it unless it didn’t resolve on its own after 4 days or so.

Keep it clean with gentle wiping, use warm compresses to help the swelling/discomfort, and help keep her comfortable.

Disinfect surfaces often and have her wash her hands frequently so that it doesn’t spread to the rest of your household. It should self-resolve in a few days.

@justgotaname, @mommyx2plus1, this is my first experience with pink eye so I’m completely clueless! I had no idea there were drops and stuff for it! I’ll definitely take her tomorrow and hopefully she’ll get some relief! Thank you ladies!

I wouldn’t wait, I would take her to Urgent Care ASAP. There’s no telling what shape her eyes will be in by Monday if she’s needs medication. The eyes can be very delicate.
Also, if she gets on pink eye meds tomorrow (if needed), she should be able to go back to school Monday. I believe she has to be on meds for 24hrs before going back to school…. Not super sure about that, but urgent care could tell you.

I would go tomorrow. Quicker you get the drops the better. Hope she feels better soon!
