Boymoms- What do you do when your boys fight ? Particularly boys with a big age gap? My almost 8 year old and almost 3 year old have been fighting a lot lately. I have spoken with my oldest many of times of about hitting his brother who is younger but it doesn’t seem to have sunk in. My 2 year old is definitely a fighter and starts it most of the time by scratching and I tell him that’s not nice or acceptable but that doesn’t seem to work either. Time outs, taken toys away don’t work. Don’t want to spank my kids but I am so tired of hearing, mom he hit me or mom he scratched me every 5 minutes.

Ask them why. Try to figure out what is leading to them becoming physical. Explain to all of them that we use words to explain how we’re feeling. Trying reminding them to take a deep breath when they are angry. I know it sounds crazy but it helps. It won’t happen overnight. It’ll take a while and you’ll need to be consistent.

Maybe the 8 year old needs a break from the 3 year year old. If the younger one is always starting it and the oldest is not but is always expected to be nice well then that could be causing the fighting. Yes he is older but at 8 he is still learning how to handle things properly.

I have taught my girls about respecting one another and also that if I have to get in the middle it won't be nice. They are to come to me if it's a dangerous situation or truly hurtful not just petty sibling fights. I remind them daily and though they are girls their behavior rivals any boy set big time! I also ask them if they would like me to hit, bite, scratch them(whatever they are doing to one another). They usually pipe down after reflecting on what that means. 5 and 3 here.
