Ahh..this who IEP meeting is driving me nuts..my daughter finally got her IEP meeting (waiting for almost 4 months for this meeting) through Zoom but it totally sucked they couldn’t decide what to do for my daughter all because my daughter had improved since March (which I’m so happy she improved so much) the report she did was in her words “old” because my daughter learned how to potty & she learned how to say some words with the “S” at the end. I told them that she is learning new things every day, they can do reports after reports & she will still be learning new words, new numbers, new sentences, but that her words & sentences were not 100% clear that anyone that my daughter would talk to that she feels comfortable with (including my sisters & brothers) do not understand half of what she is saying. But at the end of the call I was just becoming more frustrated that I just agreed to reschedule for another IEP meeting next month. I just hope they can just approve my daughter so that she can continue her speech at a school now.

What the hell? They couldn’t decide on goals for a 3.5 year old whose just learning how to really talk and enunciate!? There are so many goals you can give a 3.5 year old in speech including enunciation, social skills opportunities, short sentence structure for her age, etc. I don’t know what this SPED teams issue seems to be but it sounds kinda lazy and dismissive.

Next meeting, ask how she’s socializing with others. If she is having trouble initiating talking or playing with others, there can be a goal where they teach her that. Figure out the letters she’s not saying right and how she’s saying then like a D sounds like a T when she says it, make them create a enunciation goal for all the letters she’s having trouble with. Ask how her basic sentences structure is forming. She’s just learning how to talk, work on 3-4 word sentences so she can tell anyone her needs.

There’s three goal ideas I could come up with and I’m just a mom with a son on the spectrum. They’re full of shit and considering exiting your child because of minimal improvement. Don’t let em do that. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much. One of her old teacher & I were working with her on those words thats she had trouble with but then the IEP meeting happened & her teacher had to stop because now we thought my daughter would be continuing her speech through the school now. They even heard her talk for a bit while we were in the meeting & they didn’t understood what she was telling them until I told them what she was saying. They heard her babbling & saying words that are not completely clear and they still don’t know if she can be approved, that’s what’s been frustrating me the most.
