I would avoid a car payment and all costs, if doable. Do you have anything saved up or what's your plan goin in? You can find some REALLY nice uses cars, ESPECIALLY if you're holdin cash! If you have a decent amount of cash stashed for this purchase, I'd see what you can find to just buy outright and be done with it. Save those monthly payments for insurance, gas and car maintenance.
It's probably differently place to place, but here I could find a bangin preowned car for $5000-$6000. You can find em as cheap as a thousand or 2, but they're gonna be beaters that don't last forever. If you take care of it though, it'll get ya by while you save up for somethin better.
I mean it depends how much you have saved and willing to spend/put down. If you can buy a nice used one fully...do that. If not, put down as much cash as you can so you don't have outrageous payments or paying forever. And negotiate the price esp if you have lots of dollas on you...they'll usually give a nice discount. Go to CarMax
