My boyfriend plans to file head of household this year for taxes. His brother claims he’s doing the same thing... I told him he’s going to get both of them Audited but he says there’s a option where two people can file head of household. Does anyone know how it works filing taxes with roommates? Because I could of sworn only one person can file HOH

I thought only one person could be HOH, and being audited would really stink over a few hundred dollars. The IRS software will catch that easily if it can't be done. Hopefully there's a tax pro on here.

I will say that I'm not a tax expert but....I lived at my parents house when I was getting on my feet after my divorce. I filed HOH and I'm sure my dad did as well...my sister was an accountant and told me to do it that way. Never heard from the IRS.

Did you file on your own or go through a company

on my own.

I’m not a tax expert but when my husband and I lived with my mom temporarily, she filed HOH and so did he. My husband is still the HOH of his family regardless of his living situation. Just as long as they aren’t claiming the same dependents. That’s what the H&R lady told us.

Right. Head of household for his family, not the actual place they live.

When I had a roommate we both filed head of household and never was audited. It really doesn't matter as long as dependents aren't double claimed

HOH is your family specifically. The only thing that matters is when claiming dependents, rent, mortgage, etc. only one person can claim those unless you file jointly. I always file single HOH.

HOH is for your family. Your share of expenses and bills. It’s not about the roommates it’s about who you’re supporting.
