Mamas...with a heavy heart I ask this question....how do you explain cancer and death to a 3 yr old who loves his papa so much. He has such an unbreakable bond with him. And we’re not sure exactly how much time he has left.

I did a lot of research when my 95 year old grandma passed last year. My then 7 year old was absolutely best friends with her.

The experts I read said it was important to talk in your normal voice with them, no whispering or subdued tones like something is a secret or is very wrong. To not use terms like "Papa went to sleep". If you're religious this can be a waybto talk to them. I think saying Papa has a sickness that can happen when you're old, and that he went to Heaven is okay.

My daughter was twice as old as your son, so talking.to him on a 3 year old's terms are different. We focused on how blessed we were to have Grandma Elsa, how dearly she loved all of us, and how her little body was tired and she was ready to see Jesus and her family who had passed before her. That she didn't suffer, she was at peace.

I would not suggest taking him to calling hours where he would see distressed and crying adults. It's very confusing for them.

I am so sorry for your loss. Your baby's broken heart. My daughter just told me yesterday that when I told her Grandma had passed, her heart skipped a beat and it was the worst thing that has ever happened to her, but Grandma is always close to her and she feels her love.

I would also suggest talking to him in a place he feels comfortable with just mama. Or Mama and Daddy. Don't let him overhear it from others.

😭💔 I don’t know..we just went through this. My son lost his papa to a sudden heart attack. I still don’t know how to tell him and a little piece of my heart breaks every time he asks to go see him.
I’m so sorry that y’all are going through this 😔
