I believe they do it through occupational therapy but I could totally be wrong. I need to have my son evaluated too.

I’ve suspected that my daughter struggles with it for about a year now and I feel terrible for not already getting her evaluated but I really thought I could handle it at home. We were doing good until COVID and now our routine is completely out of wack and our normal places we would go are shut down. The last person I was on the phone with said to call her insurance company and they’d be able to tell me more about a therapist for her that’s covered by her insurance so hopefully tomorrow I’ll get more answers 🤞🏻

@mamallama2317, ugh I feel you. Your insurance will definitely be able to help you might just need a referral from her pediatrician when you find a place. What type of sensory problems do you suspect she has?

I whole heartedly believe she is a sensory seeker. The more research I do the more it fits her to a T. I can literally say that she has every single sign of it 😅

My older guy has sensory issues. We don’t have an official diagnosis of SPD, but he’s being treated like he has it during his OT and eating therapy sessions.

What kind of insurance does your daughter have? Usually insurance providers will be able to tell you what therapists or clinics are around you that take that type of insurance. Some clinics will list what providers they accept on their website. It’s really just a lot of research initially, which can be overwhelming.

We needed a referral from our pediatrician first and she provided names of a few clinics in the area. It was still on me to check if those clinics accepted our insurance though. But if you’re feeling overwhelmed with choices or need help getting pointed in the right direction, her pediatrician may be of some help.

She has TennCare but since her dad and I just married last week I’m not sure if any of that will change. I’m still trying to get all of that info checked out too. I have an appointment with her pediatrician tomorrow and I’m definitely going to see what info she can give me. She’s usually awesome with pointing me in the right directions and getting her to any kind of specialist or anything that she needs. I’m definitely super overwhelmed and today she has been in overdrive to the point I just want to cry but I can’t figure out how to help her. I tried some different movement activities that I found online, I tried exercising, I tried taking a “time in” with her, nothing has helped and I’m near my breaking point. I feel like I’m failing her because I don’t know exactly what she needs so I can’t seem to help her properly 😥

@mamallama2317, aww I’m sorry. It’s so hard when you want to help them but nothing you’re doing seems to work. Mine is both seeking and avoiding. Mostly avoiding, but he’s got some self-regulatory seeking behaviors as well. Routine, practice, time and patience are key. What didn’t work today might work another day if you try to incorporate it regularly. And some days are just unfortunately bad days 😢

Are you on Facebook? I’ve found this group to be extremely helpful.

Being stuck at home is hard. All the energy outlets aren’t available. Have you considered making your own sensory bins? We’ve got water beads, various dry pantry items work as well. Instant potatoes are fun both dry and wet. Same with uncooked/cooked pasta. Play dough, kinetic sand. All those are more quiet/seated activities, but running her hands through the textures may satisfy some seeking. I’ll admit to making mashed potato snowballs to throw in the backyard too 😅
