I stupidly decided to ask my kids dad for help to get a car and it's becoming so stressful. It's my first car and I'm already regretting it. We go to get the title tomorrow and I have a few questions as far as ownership. He's already lied about a couple of things and I feel like it's too late to go back now. I looked up answers on Google and on my states website and got nothing so can someone help me out?

Used to live in WA. You just bought him a car with your money and he’s about to drive it until the wheels fall off because in his mind you can’t drive. You also put yourself at risk when it comes to the car itself. Auction purchasing is very risky business. You can’t test drive it and if you’re not a mechanic or take someone with you who is, then auctions aren’t a good idea. There’s a very high chance it needs something major like a transmission or a head gasket or something.

I’m not sure about WA, but in CA you can get a car insured without a drivers license. Not all companies will do it, but there are broker agencies that will find someone to take on the policy. I would look into that online. If you’re in a bigger city you’ll be more likely to find that.

In my opinion, it’s not too late for them to add you to the title and registration. While the sale may have gone through, that doesn’t mean the DOL documents are part of that. If they try to say that it is too late make sure all documents get mailed to you so you can take them to DOL as soon as you get them and add your name to the title. You can even ask if they’ll mail the documents to you and you can come back to pick them up.

If you can’t cancel the sale, take another friend with you so they can drive the car straight to a mechanic for you so you can get it looked at under the hood. Let the BD know, “thank you for helping me buy the car, but I got this now” Put him in his place, don’t let his sense of entitlement turn this into a huge mess.

Thank you, I didn't even notice it says I'm in Washington, im actually in Maryland. He supposed to be teaching me to drive because I have my permit. But in the auction it has to list the issues with the car otherwise they can get in trouble (its an online auction) we picked it up yesterday and it passed recent inspections.. their dad who used to be a mechanic says that it needs a new windshield and power steering fluid. We are going today to get the title and he agreed to put my name on there instead of his

So no you don’t need a license to buy a car but maybe he wasn’t aware of that. In my state you need to register your vehicle and in order to do that you need to have car insurance which requires a license. If your state is like mine maybe that’s why he assumed you couldn’t buy a car without a license and he was thinking of the future process that does require a license. On the other hand he shouldn’t want a car in his name and to allow someone who doesn’t have a license to operate it because if something happens liabilities are on him.

There are NO laws regarding the requirement of a license for ownership of a car. As I said above, DL is required to OPERATE. NOT OWN... Here is the Washington State Department of Licensing Website. Go to the auction place and beg them to cancel your purchase. They have no legal responsibility to do so, but if the person running it has a heart, and is a person of morals they will help you. Hope it all works out. If it does, come back and I'll help you arm yourself with enough knowledge you can go get yourself a new car of your choosing within your budget. Auctions and buy here, pay here are places to avoid unless you are a seasoned car owner with ability to repair yourself. They are simply traps. No good.

@xryztalroze yeah, in a case like this person, a person would have to do a lot of research before buying the car. They can find someone trustworthy and honest to so work on the car, it really just sounds like poor planning. But hey, you live you learn, that's the name of the game sometimes.

1. All money towards the car has been paid with my money on my bank account.
2. Its a used car from an auction that I asked him for help to pick out because I know nothing about cars
3. He made the auction account in his name so I was not listed as a buyer.
4. He lied and said I cant be on the title because I dont have a license.

So basically I'm asking is it too late to be listed as a buyer and also even tho I'm not technically the buyer can I still be on the car title?

@mujerstillregal we havent got the title transferred yet, but my name definitely is not on the auction account. Just my name on the bank info. I'm buying the car for the kids so we don't have to keep taking the bus back and forth. Also I just got my learners permit and was offered an apprenticeship if I was able to drive to and from the job sites. He doesn't have a car so I got it for the kids and to learn to drive basically.

@tammyarielc I accepted your request. Have yourself added as the buyer and make sure ONLY your name is on the title. I hope I was wrong in my first understanding of what happened. I'll do what I can to help you get answers. One thing you can do is look on Kelly Blue Book at the make, model, and year of the car to see if you got it for more or less than the actual value. You should run a Carfax on the VIN number to make sure it hasn't been wrecked.

@tammyarielc ok, in MD your name can go on the title without a driver's lisence.
