Remember the maintenance of each pet. Cats need vet care. If you want low maintenance, try small creatures.

Cats are easy but if your kids are anything like mine they would get attacked by a cat for not leaving it alone lol. I would not suggest a guinea pig as you would need to clean the cage probably every other day at least to avoid it smelling. Fish? Lol I had a newt when I was a kid it was fun they live in basically a fish tank and they would be able to take it out and hold it for a bit and then put it back.

I think a cat is easy ... other then litter box and feeding it's not much work they are pretty easy to handle  and our two cats do some funny stuff haha
