Should Roommates Buy Separate Kitchen Essentials and Furniture?
If you get a house with two of your friends should everyone buy their own kitchen essentials such as pots/pans silverware and plates along with food ect? My two friends and I are thinking about getting a house together and I’m just thinking of ways this will all work. As of now everyone is sure about a 12 month lease but are opened to renewing depending on how things go. Someone suggested that we find something with lots of cabinets, section them off and everyone buys their own kitchen essentials just so if we don’t decide to renew the lease their isn’t a issue with who takes what if we were to all split the cost. Another thing she suggested is that we all buy our own food and keep our food in separate cabinets and label food for the refrigerator? What do you all think? Also same concept with furniture one buys couches, other dining table and the other coffee/end tables just to avoid figuring out who would take what when it comes to moving out?

I agree with food separate. But pots pans and plates sliverware could be divided up. If you all bought your own that would take up a lot of space

Perhaps everyone can have one cabinet to store their food but the whole pots pans thing sounds complicated. Pots and pans aren’t expansive especially if split between three people. You guys could get a good set for less than $80 and as she said above that can be easily divided if needed. The furniture concept is ideal and since each individual would be taking what they bought when it’s time to part ways it’s up to their discretion on much they wanna spend on it.

Yeah definitely dont double up on all the kitchen stuff.

I would suggest a shorter lease...do you really want to be committed to an entire year (with the possibility of stay at home orders and children involved) for a year...maybe start with six months.
As far as your actual question...I would have everyone chip in for community things. Pans, furniture, etc. And if anyone leaves early they can forfeit the money they put in. When people move out others can buy out their portion or sell items and divide the profit.
I would also divide household goods toilet paper, paper towels, soap etc and have everyone chip in on it.
Food should definitely be kept separate. Discuss how everyone will use the kitchen. If everyone is trying to eat dinner at 5pm that may end up being a problem.

I had no idea you could do a lease shorter than 12 months so definitely something I’m going to consider. I like your idea and it’s best if everything is split up and we just buy more of something if we see that we’re running low on something but one of them thinks since the house we’re looking at allows everyone to have own bathroom we should buy our own toilet trees

yes you can. Just ask your landlord. My husband and I do six months and then do month to month and another apartment we have is yearly.

I agree with all that’s been said above. Sharing common things like pots, pans dishes etc. the food u will probably wanna but your own cause not everyone like the same food ya know? Also think very very carefully about moving in with friends.
Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan and things can go south. Some friendships I’m sure have been damaged by living together. I think what u said about the larger furniture is a good idea. Either everyone buys their own thing, like u buy the couches, someone else buys the tables etc is a good idea. That way u know what’s yours and what’s theirs when u do move out
