My mom has been gone going on 12 years now, but I’ve been giving my father a Mother’s Day cards since I was 13. My mom exchanged drugs and partying for being a parent when I was 12. One day she decided to file for divorce and I had to be out of the house I grew up in with my dad in a matter of hours. After that, it was just us. I had to grow up quick and my Dad did the best he could with a pre-teen girl. His PMS bundles were the best! Now, he’s doing the same thing all over again with my three siblings for very similar reasons. Our mothers pretty much abandoned us and that old man held us down when they did. That means he plays both roles and deserves the day and the card just as much as mom does.

I’ll never forget that first card in 1993. He asked me why and I straight up told him “Well, you’ve been both mom and dad for a year now and I think you deserve a card to say thank you for taking on both roles.” He cried. I realized that single parenthood is HARD and I became the model kid who did what she needed to do and stayed out of real trouble(or at least didn’t get caught up).

I’ll always love my mom despite her faults and abandonment. Before she took her life, I forgave her for everything she ended up putting me through so I could begin the healing process. She’ll always be my biological mother who brought me into this world, but my father will always be my PARENT.

I found two perfect cards last year and I’m glad I bought both because of Rona. I can’t wait to give him the card I saved this year....I love him so much and I’ll always be grateful for his taking on both roles and I know my cards give him much needed strength 🥰
