My doctor called me today saying my labs all came back normal except for my Thyroid Stimulating Hormone was a little low at .47 (normal is .55-4.something). But she also said my T4 was normal.
Anyone know what this means?
Thyroid runs in my family. My grandma had to take meds till she passed and my mom will taking meds the rest of her life. But my results are different than theirs. Theirs always came out HIGH and their t3/t4 was always a little off as well.

Your pituitary gland produces the TSH which causes your thyroid to release more T3,T4 to give your T total. The fact that your T4 was normal is a good thing. Shows that your thyroid is functioning. The two work together to keep your body in balance. Those hormones are very important for heart regulation, temp control, metabolism, and many more. Thankfully you're not far out of range but your dr will want to observe and do a redraw in probably 3-6 months if she is just keeping an eye on it. If she is worried she will have more tests and perhaps start you on levothyroxine or synthroid at a minimum dose and then recheck blood work. When your T3/T4 are low you go into hypothyroidism and your TSH is high. When it goes high and your TSH drops low then you go into hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is more dangerous than hypo but both have their individual consequences. They can lead to many health issues.

@lillylove I honestly don't know. I've shared as much as I know for fact. There are claims that certain herbs and vitamins that can help, but I have no proof or knowledge beyond that. What I do know is that if your doctor does not refer you to an endocrinologist, you should request a referral immediately. That is the specialist who takes care of the endocrine system which includes the thyroid and all thyroid issues.

I have hypothyroidism! Your symptoms a few posts back sounded like a thyroid problem to me. Glad they tested it for you!

They called and said that they believe the numbers are low because I’m sick. So I’ll have to have them rechecked once I’m better. I was hoping this would be the answer as to why I’m feeling the way I am. But they said it’s Gastroenteritis turned Viral infection so I’m on my own 😭

Ok, I'm back but I'm about to turn in for the night. I really hope you have a good doctor who will get you to a specialist. Having your numbers off gives reason for concern. But again, not to worry, you're getting answers and your medical team with less you. I'm here for support when if needed as I am able. Oh and before I go to bed I just read the post again. If your grandmother and mother had high TSH and low T3/4, that is HYPO(under active) thyroid. Your results, based on what you have shared, indicate HYPER (overnactive) thyroid. But no one can tell you for sure except the doctor. Good night and hugs mama.
