Do any of you notice any odd behaviours with your toddlers? Charlie does things which to me looks odd or it just may be that I haven’t seen another child do it before, I’d show you a video but obviously I can’t do that on here... it’s like his whole body tenses up, he clenches his teeth and will do this weird thing with his hands. He will be three in June if that makes a difference?
Lexi does this when she gets angry like when i don't know what she's on about etc. She also does hand flapping and body stiff when she is over excited (which is alot 😂) this is some of the things that have been noted down for her autism assessment xx
It’s very interesting hearing other children’s behaviours! Bless her it must be frustrating for them when we are struggling to under stand them I’m literally the only person who understands Charlie dunno why because I think he’s talking a lot clearer lol but sometimes if he’s trying to say something new and I’m unsure he does get really angry ,Charlie doesn’t do flapping , if he’s not doing the teeth clench with hands to his mouth then he’s constantly tapping his hands it’s really hard to explain written down lol xx
My Harrison does it when he looks at my hands. He tenses up, clenches/crunches his teeth and shakes. My partner’s mum said my partner did it when he was a child when he seen things he’s obsessed with(my parter is autistic). Harrison is obsessed with finger nails😂(amongst other things). He does it when he sees someone’s hands. Our HV thinks it’s something to do with autism as we’re currently in the process of getting him diagnosed. xx
@kathleenc, sounds like you have a good health visitor ! Would have helped if I had one I suppose. Oh that’s interesting that it can be genetic, Charlie’s dads youngest brother has autism and adhd but it’s not high functioning. I had a look last night at symptoms/signs and a few of them well a lot of them surprised me as they do fit but then afew things Charlie can do. I also read in boys most of them have train, car wheel and/or dinosaur “obsessions” but then don’t boys mostly like those things any way? Xx
@erincharlieconor, Harrison is OBSESSED with wheels😂 He turns everything over in his path to find a wheel to spin! He’s also obsessed with pressing buttons. It was actually the first thing the HV noticed. He ignored all his toys except the ones that had wheels on them and he sits for AGES just spinning it over and over again. It just depends where on the spectrum they sit. My partner and his relatives who’re autistic are all really clever and he can look at numbers and remember them all😂 But he struggles under stress and socially at times. xx
@kathleenc, I find it amazing the way if someone has an interest in something knows literally everything about a topic and like certain things with numbers it’s such a gift, must be hard with the things they struggle with though.
From when Charlie was moving about that’s all he would do spin spin spin every wheel, he even had one of those electric cars and was more interested in the wheels moving lol, totally obsessed with trains too he lines them all up and then will move one at a time, he isn’t interested in playing with anything unless it’s pretending he’s hulk and smashes stuff :/ plays with dinosaurs and will only watch dinosaurs or hulk lol. Also he repeated words over and over which is normally “hulk hulk batman hulk” really fast. Xx
Thankyou! It's been a long road tbh, weve had to change him schools and everything but were finally getting there❤
And that's exactly what it was like for cjay, it was like he just shut down and blocked the world out while it happened, if I'm being honest at the time I was petrified that it was seizures but thankfully it turned out not to be! And yes, he only said about 10 words by his 3rd birthday and would only put 2 words together. He came on alot once he started nursery but he was still behind and now hes been diagnosed as 2 years developmental delayed xx
@erincharlieconor I personally dont recognise them but if he does them when hes feeling alot of emotions at once, like anger to excitement, it might be a coping mechanism for him😊 when cjay is feeling too much his coping mechanism is going to somewhere quiet in the house and having a bit of "me time" as I like to call it😂xx
@chloe.x, yeah that defo makes sense like he’s doesn’t know what to do with himself with strong emotions lol. That sounds like a wonderful coping mechanism oh I bet he’s such a wonderful boy xxx
@erincharlieconor he has his moments😂 but I'm so proud of him for how far he has come on xxx
My oldest use to do something similar when he was younger (and still to a extent now) he would get really tense to the point of shaking and grind his teeth, he wouldnt do anything with his hands but clench them into a fist and now hes on the verge of being diagnosed with autism and adhd and when I asked his pediatrician she said it would of been his form of a 'melt down' at the time. I'm not saying this is whats happening with your son, hope you get some answers soon xx
Ok Thankyou for sharing and being open about it, Oh wow that’s a very long time for a diagnosis I’m happy you are both nearly there and get the support you need if necessary ♥️
I’m sure Charlie isn’t even aware he’s doing it and when he is doing it it’s like he is in his own world sort of thing. Did your son have any speech delay at all ?xx
Does he like shake when he's clenched his teeth by any chance? My adam does this thing it seems like the same thing. His fingers spread out and like bend back. Xx
Yeah he shakes like he is really tense and stiff and he puts both hands together for example if you are holding a burger up to your mouth and clenches his teeth really hard xx
@erincharlieconor yep that's the one. No idea what it's about but Adam does the egsact same thing, so your not alone and ano I shouldn't cos it's not funny but I've just laughed cos I'm so glad I'm not the only one!! Does he make a grunting noise when es doing it. Xx
