My 4 year old woke up with a fever Saturday morning and I took him to urgent care and they did a strep and flu test. Flu was negative, strep was positive. Got some antibiotics and he’s taken 5 doses since Saturday and is still running a fever. He also has a very stuffy nose and doesn’t feel well at all. How long would you give the antibiotics to work before taking him back in. It’s been almost 48 hours on antibiotics now.

My 3 yr old gets strep every month. It depends on how bad his case is. Usually 3 to 4 days for the fever to go away.

@fourkidsandababy, wow. That’s tough on those poor babies. My son is finally fever free for the first time since Saturday.

@fourkidsandababy, yes!!!! I really didn’t want to have to go back to the dr’s office and risk exposing us to anything else. The first coronavirus case was confirmed in my county today.

I would call his pediatrician and ask before making an appointment. Also flu tests range from 50-90% accuracy so he could possibly have the flu even though the test was negative.

That’s true. It’s just starting to worry me that he’s been running fever for so long.

@blueismycolor, yeah I get nervous with that stuff too. I know it’s different but my daughter had a double ear infection a month or so ago and it took the antibiotics a few days to make much of a difference. I would call and tell the doctor you’d really rather not bring him in if you don’t need to but that you were wondering if the lasting fever was something to be concerned about.
