U know what pisses me off so bad is when people get dogs then get rid of the dog then get another freaking dog. Like when u get/adopt a dog, or any animal for that matter, u are signing yourself up to keep said Pet their entire life. To just get rid of pets then go buy more is one of those things I’ll never understand. This is why u shouldn’t get a pet unless u plan on taking care of it for their lifetime. As a former vet tech I’ve seen that a lot. It makes me really sad cause the likelihood of keeping them next animal is pretty low don’t ya think? Ugh ok rant over

So I agree but there’s a bit of a grey area here too for me unfortunately. My dog is now over 11. We’ve had him since he was a puppy. Around when he turned 5 he started acting very aggressively towards my husband and myself. We had multiple vet checks to make sure there was nothing physical going on and then we worked with a veterinary behaviorist to try and get things under control. He is very anxious and fear aggressive. The behaviorist essentially helped us understand and avoid his triggers but he was set enough in his behaviors at that point that he knew that he could get his way by biting us so we just had to avoid any scenario like that. It’s been a tough road with him. Now that we have a toddler it’s much harder and she is unfortunately not able to really interact with the dog at all. I’ve seen him be very calm with groomers and vets and I think that I probably approach him with anxiety because of our history and I’m nervous of his actions. If I could find a kid free home for him with a calm and authoritative owner I think it would be the best thing ever for him. Unfortunately at this point that is unlikely and hopefully we can provide both him and my kids with the best possible situation under these circumstances. That being said I don’t think that this means I’m an unfit pet parent because scenarios change and it turns out he’s not a very kid friendly dog.

Sad but it happens. Even with human children😭🤧

I have worked on a few cases where owners wanted to surrender pet due to costs after pet being diagnosed with diabetes etc. then techs are scrambling to find a worthy person to adopt pet before it has to go through the shelter system.

But there are other cases in where its a health issue and pets are given up. Or owner passed on and the family does not want to take responsibilities due to laws of their living space, will not get along with other pet mates etc.

One of my friends adopted a dog that they went and visited with their children and had a wonderful experience worth him. No issues very friendly and good with the kids. 2 days after they brought him home him turned around and attacked her son tearing up his leg. I'd say that's a good reason to get rid of the dog and yes they have another one.

Yeah some people are very irresponsible like that. I can see how having children changes things for sure - still, I would never give up my pets. There are certain circumstances though, like my SIL adopted a dog who turned out to have aggression issues and the shelter never mentioned that to her even though she asked because she has small children. And also, what pees me off a lot is that shelters always say don't adopt a puppy during christmas time as a present, but then they'll post stuff like "its international love your pet day, come and adopt a companion today!" 🤦‍♀️

I agree my hubs ex side is the same. She's trying to give us her cat because she don't want it. Also my mom nieghbor just got a dog and wants to get rid of it because they are too busy for him. I don't understand why they didn't figure that out before getting him.

I had a dog from the time I was 7 till I turned 22 she was 18 years old and passed and was very easy to train had no problems . Got another dog after she passed had the dog a freaking year and STILL never got the concept of potty training even after pro trainer worked with him for 6 months so I ended up giving him to someone else.

Over the holidays pets in shelters were getting adopted more. Well after the hoildays people realized they didn’t want it or probably didn’t even ask the person receiving the pet if they want it. So the shelters became so over crowded they had to put some down.

I could rant about this for days. So irritating.

Do not give someone a pet if you don’t know for sure if they want one.

My MIL is like this, she gets pets and then gets rid of them in a matter of months. The only reason she still has her cat is because before she moved here we offered to take her in. We have 2 of the momma kitties kittens (now adults) and we have the bio dad. I think she only kept Luci to make a point that we don't really understand 🤦 but DH said all his life she would get dogs then get rid of them for no good reason, not behavior or health related anyway. I know one of the dogs bit one of her son's as a kid, but DH said he deserved it because he kept fliking the dog, pulling it's tail and being mean to it. She had a little itty bitty dog when we lived with her named Bella, the dog was SOOO sweet but his mom was just lazy! She never took Bella out and would just sit on her phone for hrs while Bella tore and chewed up bits of whatever she could find. I helped take care of the pup but she eventually gave it back to her sister, so now the pup is in a great home with it's bio brother. Some people are just lazy and it's sad that these animals have to suffer for it 😟

I just realized my comment looks like we are giving my dog up. I hope it didn’t one across that way. We could never give him to a shelter. I do love home tons. If we were ever able to rehome him into a kid free household that is something I would consider but at his age and with his issues it’s very unlikely so we will continue onward and upward as we have been.
