We are processing to phase one of correcting my sons underbite. I know I posted about this before but we’ve tried a few…

@ss3mom, i didn't have the face mask. what they did with mine (they may not do it to him just how they did mine) is they put two screws into the bone at the roof of my mouth and then once those healed but 2 in each cheekbone let those heal then put this crazy looking metal thing that had things that latched onto the screws. it was painful at first just because they started doing the screws after the numbing shot wore off so i felt them being screwed in and heard it. after few days i got use to it. i was around 11 when i had it done had it for few years. it did help some with the over bite but not where they were wanting it to be so they talked to my dad about breaking my bottom jaw and bringing it forward i told my dad he better not let em do that so never got it done.

k he’s not having that done haha. No screws or anything going into his mouth. He’s just getting the retainer places over his teeth with a little expander that I have to rotate every so often. I’ll get more details when he gets it placed. He will wear that and the face mask for 9-12mths

ugh I know that’s what I’m so worried about. They have to expand his palate so his upper jaw sits over his lower jaw. His underbite is pretty noticeable right now and the 2 things she did try haven’t been successful!! Luckily he’s the “good child” lol. His younger brother forget it I could t imagine him getting this stuff done lol! Thanks for your scary input hahahaha!

I’m sure my son will need braces in the future but for now we have to fix the underbite!! Thanks for your help and replies

Has your daughter seen an orthodontist yet? We started around 6 I wanna say so she’s prob still too young. But what the dentist says it’s best to fix now then when he gets older. She said it could get way worse if left untreated and treatment when they are older is much more painful. I’ll def post when he gets it done to show u all and the face mask thing. That is crazy this face mask and I really wish I took a pic of it

she hasn't seen an orthodontist yet, her dentist tells us we should wait a little longer until we see an orthodontist.

Any research I've done on my own says the earlier the better, but I also need to take my daughter's autism into account as well. I would like her to have some understanding of what's going on and not interpret anything the orthodontist does as some kind of punishment or something.

I don't know, maybe I'm just over thinking things, but I just remember the first day I woke up after I got my braces (I was a 4th grader) I was so pissed off at my parents because my mouth hurt. I remember thinking "why have my parents done this to me?"

On the bright side the orthodontist we plan to see has tons of experience with ASD children since his son is also autistic. We're very lucky to have found a pediatric dentist whom my daughter loves and an orthodontist with so much experience with kids on the spectrum.

yea she’s def still too young. I’m so very happy u found someone who knows how to handle a child with asd! That’s so important cause kids are scared as is going to the dentist and having these strange things happen to them!!

oh ok. He’s still losing teeth so we have no idea if they will be straight or not haha

We got the bill for it and it’s going to cost us, out of pocket, about 1300. That’s with insurance covering 1000 for a lifetime, what a joke that is right? Also this is only phase one so I can’t even imagine what this is all going to cost when it’s all said and done. But we don’t really have a choice. It needs to be done now or it will be way worse for him in the future ya know?

Yup! My 13 year old needs a palate expander to start her journey and the down payment will be $900. We got approved for financing but it’s still going to hurt the pocket. So beneficial to get it done now. Good job although it hurts.
