So my fiance has this insane infection in his gums. Big bubble and increadably painful. He recently lost his insurance so he has no dental plan. He got penicillin to treat the infection but he's on day three and there's been no change. Between going to the hospital and different dentists this is coating us an insane amount of money. I just got one of the bills and it was over 3 grand. And we have two more coming not coy ting the dentist visit and all anyone has done is give him antibiotics. He NEEEDS a root canal. It's his front two teeth so he doesn't want them pulled. Idk wtf to do for him. Insurance won't start for months if I sign him up now. He's been in excruciating pain since Saturday night and not only is he having to deal with it it's making my life pure hell. I'm at a loss and slowly losing my mind.

Can he go to a dentures in a day place.. I know he doesnt want them pulled BUT it would be cheaper to have them pulled and either a bridge made or a partial denture that just goes for those two teeth? Most times they can do it same day and he will leave with new teeth the same day, just call to find out if they can do it same day. Dds dentistry and dentures in a day are some of the ones I know has an onsite facility to make them. Root canals are so expensive even with insurance. Hoping you find a good outcome soon!

I looked them up and he would still need insurance at the one that's near us. I called and left messages at the dental schools nearby hoping they can fix it either cheap or free. I can't believe they make u wait a whole freaking year after starting insurance to be able to have anything other than a cleaning done. It's insanely frustrating. I'll keep looking at dentures in a day places and see if I can talk him into doing that instead though. Thank you!

sorry I just got a chance to write you back. See if you have a DDS near you! I just got dental insurance again in December and have to wait to get some of my work done bc I let it lapse 4 weeks 🤦 so I have to wait until next december to get my implant. But when I go to dds (even with insurance bc they are the cheapest in the area and I'll get more work done for cheaper) A LOT of ppl go in there with no insurance and just pay with cash or check. If y'all are in a bind and can't afford all of it at once, try to apply for Care Credit to pay for the partial or root canal-- whatever he decides to do. Theyre really good about helping in a pinch for dentist stuff. Hope this helps some ❤

@that_momma it does thank you so much! We tried care credit and He doesn't qualify but I'm hoping they will take payments of some sort. He really doesn't want to get it pulled but it's looking like it may be the best option. I'll look for a dds and see what they say. As if now he has an appointment in the morning.

PP is right. They are pretty cheap now and it would only be a partial. Sounds like an abscess

It is an abscess. He's had one before and needed a root canal then but it got better before he went in and he chickened cuz he's afraid of the dentist and figured he was all good since it went away. Now he's paying for it cuz it's SO much worse than last time. His whole mouth is swollen. He's walking around looking like Donald duck and literally moaning in pain every couple minutes. He said it hurts up into his nose and all along his jaw line. It just kills me how all these people have seen the pain and how bad it is and they can just turn him away like they do cuz of insurance.

yeah we went through the same thing for years and my husbands whole face would swell up and he couldn’t see or eat because it was so bad. They’d only give him antibiotics and pain meds. We eventually had to have his teeth pulled to stop it. He had several root canals as a child and it didn’t really help. Some problems go way deeper than you think. Tell him to use a hot compress on his face, wether he just warms up a wash cloth and places there for a few minutes at a time. That’s what helped hubby some. And be careful!! Don’t let him pop it or swallow any of it if it does pop because it’s very dangerous to ingest!

I think he's gunna end up getting his pulled too. He seems better today than he has been the last couple days but he's still swollen and the abscess is pretty big. He knows not to pop it cuz last time it popped on it's own and he was freaking out thinking he was gunna die cuz he didn't know if he swallowed any. I put some rice in a sock and warmed it up for him but it's super sensitive and anything too warm or cold causes a ton of pain.

Has it gotten worse....he might need a stronger antibiotic. I had something once and needed two rounds before it cleared up.

No it seems to be a bit better today. He went to work and actually managed to eat. The swelling is a bit better than yesterday but it's still there. He's got another appointment tomorrow and they might switch his antibiotic. It said on the bottle to take two for his first dose and then 4 a day after that.

I have the same issue with my teeth the only thing some of these clinics will do for free sometimes for the homeless etc will be pull them ive had multiple route canals it sucks but he could have had at least cleanings sometimes for 60$ at some places and free x rays

They gave him a free xray yesterday and the antibiotics but they couldn't pull it or do a root canal cuz of him not having insurance. I'm trying to find a place that'll do a payment plan.

Try amoxil or amoxicillin. Or cleocin/clendamycin. Both are great for abscesses. You could also double the dose once and then take as prescribed. Also many general dentists can do root canals without insurance. If you go to specialty dentists, such as an endodontist, for a root canal then chances are they will require you to have insurance and be much more expensive. I work for a dentist and do everything from insurance to actual dental work and with an abscess a good antibiotic is needed. I hope he gets relief soon!
