Potential trigger post...I apologize in advance but I really need to vent on this one because as a suicide survivor I am very triggered by what happened last night...
I took my brother to a birthday party last night for my Dad. When I was talking to the birthday girls mom, she let me know that the kids have gotten close and my brother confides in her. Well, my brother told her a few weeks back that moving has been tough on him and he’s been thinking about hurting himself with a knife. The little girl told her mom, who told the teacher, but this was the first I was hearing about this. I assumed my father didn’t tell me because I had been having my own PTSD meltdown and didn’t want to trigger me further. When I took him home last night I asked my father about this situation and how that was handled. He had no idea that this had even happened.
My blood is boiling. In his 30 day IEP meeting we told the staff which included the principal that my brother has PTSD and anxiety and it’s the reason mom isn’t around or doesn’t have any rights to her children. We asked that if any new alarming behaviors came up to bring it to our attention. All of my siblings are waiting to start therapy again, so we do acknowledge the need for that. However this happened and we are finding out about it weeks after the fact and not from the school where it happened and was reported.
At 8:00am on the dot Monday morning that principal is getting 2 emails. One from me, the person who received the info and also has a son with autism in that school and is now very concerned for his well being and safety. The other from the actual parent who is my 66 year old father. We have a lot of questions and we want answers.

That’s what I want to know. Where’s the teacher, principal and school psychologist on this? Was there intervention? If so, what did they find and why are we just now finding out about it from a parent off campus at a birthday party instead of from your staff? You think I’m feisty just breathing? Wait until you mess with my son or siblings....

this is why more kids and hate to say this have been committing suicide and they are young children. These school need to handle the situations better this is some serious shit

Oh I would be LIVID! Fuck an email girl, I'd be at that school at 8 a.m. DEMANDING an expanation! They gonna deal with me RIGHT now, in person, not after they've had time to spin it.

I’ve thought about that too but when dealing with admin, I want a paper trail as well as a meeting. My father agreed, so they don’t get the email
Over the weekend to work the spin, they get it once the first bell rings.
What they don’t realize is I know two psychologists who work in the district and they’re talking me through the process down to which laws I quote and everything.

Good for you for taking action! If you don't hear any concern from the principal definitely take it up with the superintendent and even the school board if you have to. It's a gray area since he wasn't at school when he actually said it but the fact that the teacher didn't even reach out to you or at the very least his dad is so concerning. As a mandated reporter she's dropping the ball. If she received the email and responded to the other parent then she needs to go to training or something again.

The teacher knew and didn't do anything? Teachers are mandated reporters. I wonder if she told someone like a school counselor. In some schools teachers will pass along info to the councilor and they go further with it.

My brother told his friend at school, his friend told her mom, her mom reported it to the teacher and we didn’t know until last night and it was right before Christmas. I would think even if the teacher actually followed procedure and called the psychologist in and they did a suicide risk assessment on my brother and nothing came of it they would at least notify my father of what happened. He has behavior goals in his IEP for crying out loud! It smells fishy...

Your father should have been notified. Depending on his behaviors and goals in his IEP then sometimes a suicide risk assessment isn’t necessary, but not knowing his goals I couldn’t say for sure. Either way, making a parent aware of the situation is a must. If they did an SRA, even if the risk level came back low, then part of the requirements is parental notification... at least it is in my district.
