How to Encourage Potty Training for a Child with ASD and SPD?
Ladies I’m not sure what to do. My son peed in the potty last night. I was stoked and I still am. I have him 2 skittles(I offered 3 but he only wanted 2 but he gets 1 from now on). Now what happened with that is, I was running his tub keeping my hand under the water to check it. He was standing next to me getting undressed and I looked over at him to see how he was doing and I see that he’s peeing. He was standing up peeing because he sees dad do that and he just HAS to be like dad, which is totally fine. But since I didn’t ask him to go potty, he didn’t say anything to me and I didn’t know it was happening until he was done, I’m not sure what to do. A friend of mine said take him every 30 minutes and every morning after he wakes up. He has mild ASD and spd and we suspect adhd. Tonight I let him walk around with no pull up or pants on and he eventually did try to go potty and he did pee a tiny bit. I don’t want to scare him so I’m kind of just trying to be as casual about it as possible but....idk what to do next.

You mean he was peeing in the toilet without being asked or he was just peeing on the floor? I don’t really understand what the problem is. Potty training takes time, sometimes months. Keep offering a reward, I’d suggest something other than candy for pee because that’s a lot of candy everyday. Try stickers or a stamp. Candy is fine for poop. I wouldn’t use the naked method though because then you’ll still have to teach him how to wear underwear. Adults don’t walk around naked, why should kids? You need to teach him about wearing underwear and how to pull them up and down and what to do when he has an accident.

I’m sorry correct me if I’m wrong but why are you always so defensive when it comes to moms asking for help? Like all you do is attack their parenting skills or even try to put them down, that’s not okay at all. We’re all here for one reason and is to look after each other without judging we are all moms who still need more advice or options from other moms not someone who is constantly trying to make other moms looks dumb or like they don’t knw what are they doing.

was this for me? 😬

huh? I have no idea what you’re talking about. How did I put her down? I said don’t use the naked method. That’s my opinion, she can do whatever she wants. I’ve heard of a lot of moms say they used the naked method and it backfired because their kid only knew how to pee while naked and still had to learn how to use underwear. You’re just creating an extra unnecessary step.

Let me know how it goes for you! If you decide to do the every 30 min thing...I’ve tried that with my son but I find he gets really annoyed lol. Don’t get me wrong he will go to the potty but every 30 mins he’s just like ughhh leave me alone...I’ve heard not to over do it bc it will stress them out but idk 🤔

My son gets irritated whenever I would make him go to the bathroom every whatever minutes. We might try that but idk if I’ll enforce it too much just because when he’s naked from the waist down he takes it upon himself to go potty.

I know boys are different from girls when potty training but what I did for my daughter was put her on the potty every 15-20 mins, used panties(the naked method never worked for us) & put her on as soon as she woke up. Everytime she pooped was the only time she got a piece of candy & every time she used the bathroom regardless I would praise her. Also no drinks after 6pm. It took about a few months & she now goes on her own without even saying anything to me. I'm going to teach my son the same method & then eventually show him how to stand once I know he can use the potty on his own.

We had always done sit not stand but he loves to be like dad and obviously he stands so my son was like I want to be like daddy lol. I’m okay with it, he stands on his toes and it works in our downstairs bathroom. I was definitely not expecting him to start potty training himself let alone do it standing up lol

I always just gave my son a high five. I had a similar experience he kinda just picked it up like nothing. I never have food rewards because I didn’t want him to expect it every time. I think you’re doing a great job. Keeping it casual is great I did the same. Again a high five and some verbal praise was all my son needed.

I’m only using skittles because I want to do EXACTLY what his day care does with the potty thing. Or like we just want to do what eachother is doing. She does 1 skittle as a reward for all her kids so I am too. I don’t want him to go potty at school and not get a skittle and see that everyone else went potty and got one. It won’t last long. Probably about a month she said we take them away

I'd personally let him continue leading the way. He's already started doing it on his own. Continue taking him in every 30 minutes. As for the no pants comment 🙄 if being naked from the waist down is making it easier on him while he is starting out, keep it that way. Obviously you will tell him that he has to wear clothes in public. And he will learn how to pull his pants on and off as he gets further along and used to feeling the pressure of needing to use the potty.

Being naked from the waist down IS helping. Last night he ran around the living room like that for about 30 minutes before bed time and he ran to the bathroom “potty potty potty” and there was no trying to get his pull up and pants off and he was able to do it on his own. I think the about I do this without assistance is what’s been key, however He can’t do that at day care and he’s there every single day. I’m wanting to maybe keep him bottomless this weekend during the day and see what happens.

I only offered 3 skittles because I was excited, he’d never peed on the potty before, he was standing up and took it upon himself to do it so I OFFERED 3 he only accepted 2 though but from now on he will only get 1 then I will. Not do skittles after maybe a month.
