Anyone have experience with a child with an underbite, or cross bite as they call it now? My son has an orthodontist appt this Thursday to evaluate his underbite and I don’t really know what to expect. So if anyone has experiences with it let me know!

They should take impressions or pictures and then I’ll sit you down and go over everything. Dakota actually has already had braces. The evaluation is the easy part they’re just gonna look at all of the teeth and figure out what’s best for him

Eva has a slight over bite that they are going ahead and fixing while they fix her crossbite that she has in the back. Her molars were leaned toward her tongue so she wasn't chewing on the tops of her teeth.
Ortho did xrays and examined her teeth. We did mini meeting to explain why she needed braces. Then they filed with insurance. After insurance approval and all the costs were set we went in for spacers (very painful) to be put in and molds to be taken for appliances. A week later she got her braces.

@ss3mom, I never had braces so this was all new to me. It broke my heart and I let her stay home from school the first 2 days when she was hurting lol. Now we homeschool so I'm like here's a popsicle lay in bed and let's get a couple of lessons done

right after her 11th birthday. I'm pretty sure like 3 days after. She hated me for it

These are spacers. It hurts to put them in and the week they wear them. Soft foods that week if ideal. At least the first two days.

geez they look really painful. Ugh I’m dreading this happening to him. I guess we will just go and discuss what the plan of treatment will be then go from there. Thanks again!

just keep Tylenol/ ibuprofen and icepacks handy as well as popsicles. I crush up the popsicles she can eat it with a spoon and up the coldness on where she needs it. We try to do softer meals the first two days so soups or baked potatoes. Breakfast having eggs worked too. Just something that won't take a lot of teeth work to chew.

@ss3mom, keep me updated on your experience with this. Our dentist told us that our son has a cross bite and referred us to an orthodontist. However, I haven’t had time to call and schedule with the ortho yet. Definitely curious about the process.

Spacers are the absolute worst. I had them when I was young. When I had them they hurt for a few days then it didn’t really bother me, felt like a chunk of ham stuck in my teeth. Then they put the hook things on and those were wayyy worse, it was a metal ring went all the way around my tooth with a hook thing that I had to keep putting bands on. Tore my mouth up. Hopefully he does better than I did, my teeth ended up messed up still because they wouldn’t take my wisdom teeth out early on and it just forced everything back to how it was pre treatment
