"If a pregnant woman is lying on her back, the fetus is more likely to compress the inferior vena cava, decreasing the amount of blood returned to the heart," Pien told Live Science. "There's not a lot of research comparing sleeping on the right and left side, but at least theoretically, you'd also have less potential compression of the IVC on your left side than on your right."”
I also think it has something to do with the cord? Or something along those lines. I was on hospital bed rest for 9 weeks and the nurses would periodically wake me up in the middle of the night if my sons heart rate dropped and I was on my right side. They would ask me to flip to the left and then his HR would start to increase.

There's a vein on the right side that can be compressed by your uterus if you lie on your back or right side. That's what I was told
