How do my kids lose things to the point of not being able to find them even after turning the whole house upside down?

I swear a little elf steals things from my house. Everytime my kids can't find something I'm like "well it didn't just grow legs and walk away!! Find it 😥" lol

Normally the kids lose stuff and I’m like “alright I got this, I’ll find it.” And then I immediately find it. This time I’ve literally looked in even the most ridiculous places and still can’t find it. 🤦‍♀️
