Anyone have any experience with blood transfusions while pregnant? Got a call that my iron dropped again over a whole point and it's now at like 9.6 down from 10.9 two weeks prior . It has started at 12.2 my first appointment with them. I've been on 325mg of Ferrous Sulfate(iron supplements) since February. He said if I come in next week( my next scheduled appointment) and it's even lower I'll need to discuss possible blood transfusion as treatment for severe anemia.

Mine dropped to a 7 a few weeks before I gave birth to my first and they didn’t give me one. Hopefully you stay steady so you won’t either! 🖤

Cook with a cast iron skillet!! And make lentil soup me and my aunt are really anemic and we do this every pregnancy or before any surgery to avoid transfusions. Also drink orange juice when you take your iron. They told me it helps absorb better. During my first c section I did have to get blood only because I lost so much and they were talking about it during my second and I did all that and it helped soo much. I hope you feel better.

I had to have 4 transfusions after giving birth to my daughter as my iron was DANGEROUSLY low. The nurses had told me they had never had a patient in their care before lose the amount of blood i did and still be conscious and aware as i was. I didnt know how to take that lol Its very scary,

My level was at 7 when I was admitted for preterm labor at 32 weeks and when I had him at 39 weeks. I was taking 2 pills per day but my levels were not going up. I didn’t get a blood transfusion but they wouldn’t discharge me unless I had an iron infusion.

My levels are about the same right now and they're wanting to give me iron through an IV but they haven't said anything about a blood transfusion. Did they say why they couldn't just give the iron?

@rariszoo I would ask them if it's possible to just do the IV iron. It may not be for you for some reason. Maybe you aren't absorbing iron at all or your body just isn't accepting it? I haven't heard of a blood transfusion during pregnancy for this before though. That makes me curious. Hopefully your levels go up and don't get any lower! 🤞🏻🤞🏻

An iron infusion (Iron through an IV) is proactive and a blood transfusion is reactive. In my opinion if you can regulate your iron levels before delivery then you may be able to avoid the blood transfusions. It worked for me with my second pregnancy! (But I’m not a doctor lol)

That was what I thought. Thank you for your comment! I wasn't sure why they would do the blood transfusion unless it were during/after delivery.

If your levels are that low you can ask about being proactive and get an iron infusion. I had undiagnosed anemia with my first and lost a lot of blood on the table. I ended up with three blood transfusions after delivery. With my second pregnancy my levels were less than 7, the range stopped at 7 so im not sure exactly what it was. They had me sit for a 4 hour iron infusion around 36wks and it helped regulate my levels for delivery. We are watching it again this time but they told be because of my history they will have extra blood on hand even if my test results come back normal.

I had to have 2 transfusions after having my 2nd baby. My levels were really low, I really didn't want it but I had no choice, things like that just give me the chills...
