I'm normally a lurker but I'm looking for advice.. my 3yo son is a kind, loving, sometimes boisterous little boy and when I picked him up from preschool yesterday they had a form saying he had cut another child's hand with a pair of scissors, now I 100% accept that my child is a fault here and we've had a thorough chat about why his actions were wrong in which he kept repeating 'i didn't mean for it to hurt my friend' which makes me think he didn't realise the consequences of his actions. But I've had a thought that I didn't have at the time.. how did he get scissors? why wasn't he being supervised? I don't want to cause trouble or look like I'm making excuses for my son but the whole incident wouldn't have happened if he'd been being properly watched? Am I wrong for wanting to bring this up at drop off tomorrow morning? My husband thinks I should let it go thanks for reading, I didn't half ramble on 🤣 x

in the nursery where I work sometimes scissors are kept in child's reach in the art and craft area as the children love to cut they are supervised well by when you have 20 odd kids in one room running riot and only 3 staff members it's hard you keep a watchful eye on all children

Thank you all for replying. He attends a small preschool that caters for 2yr olds up until primary school, it is one large open room with a small kitchen/office, and a toilets/sink room they have 4/5 assistants for upto 16 children per session. I think to address my concerns I'm going to ask if they can make sure scissors aren't kept in the usual place (a cubby on the crafts table) when either of my children are there, I don't think I'm being unreasonable in asking for them to put them up out of reach x

Ratio over 3's is 1-8 but if they have a teacher (like I do) it's 1-13

What room is he in? From pre-school 3-5 scissors are often out at children's level in an art area. So although staff should still be aware and be supervising the children, if he got a pair when they didn't see it could happen. We had a child who repeatedly would go around cutting things so we did place them up high on days he was in. But otherwise they are out. Usually I have staff situated around the room in each area however in reality sometimes I have 3 staff with 30 children so you don't always see everything straight away.

I'd be asking questions. Even if they weren't given to him and he's picked them up off the side, he'd have to have been unsupervised for a while!

100% they should be supervised, but there is probably 1 adult per 5 or so children, so I think also put yourself in the nursery workers shoes too, the fact of the matter is they can’t watch each child individually like a hawk all of the time and I think as parents we’re very quick to be quite accusational towards school/nursery teachers. They also need to let children have the opportunity to use scissors etc and explore if they don’t then how else will the children learn. However I would wonder what scissors they were using, at that age I would expect them to be pretty blunt to prevent these sorts of accidents - maybe go from that perspective if you feel you need to follow it up.
