I'm sure it depends on the child, but my son didn't care when we stopped giving it to him. He only used it at nap & bedtime. We stopped using it around 11 or 12 mths I think. No problems at all. My other children wouldn't even take a pacifier.
My kids used theirs only for sleeping. The paci's never left the crib. At 2 years old when they could actually understand a little bribe, we told them if they'd go to sleep without it, when they woke up they'd get a little treat. It worked like a charm. They never fussed or asked for it after that. We gave them treats for maybe 2 or 3 days in a row after sleeping without it
We slowly weaned starting at 6 months so my son could be done with it by 12 months. Our goal was to only offer it at naptime and bedtime. Then once he was 12 months we took it away completely.

Nope. My son self weaned from his binky at 10 months. He only used it when he was sleeping because I would swap my boob out for the binky and one day, in his sleep, he just would not take it at all and then he never took it again. Lol
