Guys I need some feedback I’m so upset. I know it’s kind of long but I would really appreciate it if you guys would read this.

Okay so i live in southwest Ohio and I am a 19 y/o freshman in college with an almost 2 month old little girl. The college I attend is completely funded through my scholarships and loans and my family....my boyfriend (her father), My daughter, and I live in an on campus apartment that is also funded. I am a full time student with type 1 diabetes so I receive assistance through the state for our medical insurance and WIC for her formula. He works but makes very little money. I have currently been REALLY struggling with what I want to do in life. I originally wanted to become a doctor because it makes good money and I’m interested in the medical field, but after having her I want to get the best job possible in the shortest amount of time. I’ve been struggling to find a major that can give me a great job after 4 years at the university I attend. So I’ve been looking and I can go to a nearby community college and get an associates in Dental Hygiene that makes really really good money. My initial thought was omg why wouldn’t I take this opportunity but tonight my boyfriend lectured me and I ended up crying. By switching colleges we would need to find somewhere to live which I was aware of so I would also need to be working. No big deal. He said if I start working we’re gonna lose WIC, we’re gonna lose our health insurance and I cannot afford my insulin and everything she needs. And basically I have to keep myself stuck here when I don’t even know how this school is benefitting me at this point. I’m lost, sad, and need help.

My advice is stepping stones. More money, and takes a little longer to reach your ultimate goal but you won’t have 8 years of living on nothing. I started out as a waitress, great money, crappy benefits, I worked part time and went to school full time. While I was in school I enrolled in the phlebotomy program to get my foot in the door at a hospital, after 2 semesters I had a job and the hospital paid tuition. Then you finish your associates, then Your bachelor’s and then med school. Once my grants ran out I was very happy to work somewhere with healthcare and tuition benefits. I’m only at a standstill right now because I broke my foot and got pregnant at the same time. Also the medical field is not something you do for the money. It’s heart wrenching and plenty of your pay is in the smile on others faces for a very long time. Do something you love and are interested in not something for the pay!

Does your school have a nursing program? If you’re interested in the medical field then getting your BSN might be a good option. There are plenty of other careers that you can get with a bachelors. Sounds like your boyfriend is comfortable living with minimal income while your scholarships cover the basics.

Its not about the money, find something YOU want to do. As in career. You will end up getting a job you hate just for the money, and that's not a good mindset.

I know I just want to be able to be comfortable in the way we live. I don’t want to struggle. I’m just having a hard time figuring out how any major can get me a job after 4 years. I feel like all college does is prepare you for graduate school
