___________

Dr. L(evatino)-"(Thank you. I only have 5 min(utes), so I'm going to get right into it.) 2nd-trimester DNE (?)abortions performed between (roughly) 14 & 24 weeks of gestation.

Your patient today is 17 years old, and she is 22 weeks pregnant, & the baby is the length of your hand plus a couple of inches.

She's been feeling her baby kick for the last several weeks. She is asleep on an operating room-table. You walk in to that room scrubbed & gowned & after removing laminarea (SP?), you introduce a suction catheter into the uterus. This is a 14-french (?) suction catheter. If she was 12 weeks pregnant or less, you could basically do this whole procedure with just this. Babies this big don't fit through catheters. After sucking out the amniotic fluid from around the baby, you introduce an instrument called a sofer-clamp. It's about 13 in.(inches) long, it is made of stainless-steel. The business-end of this clamp is 2 & half in. long and half-in. wide. There are rows of sharp teeth. This is a grasping instrument, & when it gets a hold of something it doesn't let go.

A DNE procedure is a blind-abortion. So picture yourself introducing this, & grabbing anything you can blindly & pull & I do mean hard. And out pops a leg about this long (hold out pointer-finger & thumb, extend as far as you can) which you put on the table next to you, then reaching in, pull again & pull out an arm of about the same length, which you put on the table next to you. And you use this instrument again & again to pull out the spine, the intestines, the heart & lungs. The head on the baby that size is about the size of a LG. plumb. You can't see it, but you've a pretty good idea if you got it if you got your instrument around something and your fingers are spread apart as far as they go. You know you did it right if when you crush down on the instrument & white material runs out of the cervix. That was the baby's brains. & then you can pull out skull pieces. & you had a day like I had a lot & sometimes a little face comes back & stares back at you. Congratulations , you've just successfully performed a 2nd-trimester DNE procedure-abortion. You just affirmed your right to choose."

"Dr. Levatino, 1 more q.(uestion). Why did you end your practice of doing abortions?"- ??

Dr. Levatino-

"I did over 1200 abortions in a 4-year practice in private, not counting the 1s I did in my training. (Umm), I met my wife at Albany-Medical center, we got married abt a yr. later & we had a fertility problem. Afters years of failed infertility-treatment & trying to adopt a child, we were blessed with a little girl that we named Heather in August of 1978.

As sometimes happens in these situations my wife got pregnant the very next month & we had 2 children 10 months apart. 2 months short of my daughter Heather's 6th birthday, she was killed in an auto-accident & literally died in our arms in the back of an ambulance.

& anyone who has children might think they have some idea of what that feels like but haven't been through it you have no idea whatsoever. I know people find it hard to believe, but what do you do after a disaster? You bury your child & then you go back to your life. & I don't remember exactly how long it was after my daughter died that I showed up at Albany Medical center O.R. #_9 to perform my first 2nd-trimester DNE abortion. I wasn't thinking of it as anything special this was routine to me. But I reached in & literally pulled out an arm or leg & got sick.

You know, earlier on I described stacking up body-parts on the side of a table y’know it's not to gross people out. When you do an abortion you need to keep inventory, you have to make you get 2 arms and 2 legs & all the peces. If you don't, your patient's going to come back infected, bleeding or dead. So I soldiered on & finished that abortion. & I know it sounds like I said hard for people to believe but I'm telling you straight-up my experience. Y’know after 1200 abortions, 1st and 2nd-trimester abortions up to 24 weeks and all the rest of it & being very dedicated to it & for the 1st time I really looked. For the first time in my life I really looked at the pile of body parts on the side of the table & I didn't see her wonderful right to choose & I didn't see all the $$$money I just made all I could see was somebody's son or daughter. & I stopped doing late term abortions & several months later stopped doing all abortions."

("No more questions, thank you."-?)

End.
