I'm not trying to start any debates so please don't comment if you feel the need...

BUT Netflix has a new documentary called "American Circumcision."

This is definitely a controversial topic. I just wanted to share with anyone who is interested. I never really considered the ethical or human rights perspective. I've always taken the stance that it's a parents preference and either choice is fine, but there's no legitimate medical reason... It's a cosmetic or religious practice.

There is also Q&A video on the Facebook page.

I’m gonna check out the Facebook page now. I was really gripped by that documentary. It’s the only thing that was able to help convince my boyfriend to be on board with me about deciding against circumcision for our son. As soon as he saw that short clip of the actual procedure being done he covered his ears and was like HELL NO. It’s just insane to me that this is still so common in the US.

I think for some men it is really hard to consider not having your son look like you. And I know many women who choose it because they do believe some of the misconceptions or see a benefit regardless. It's their child and their choice so I will not judge, but it is good to hear both sides and make an informed decision since you cant reverse it. It's so common in the US so I think this a good documentary to at least see another viewpoint than what we have grown up being told.

If you don’t want debates on your posts you can always turn comments off or hide comments so that only you can see them. 😊

I’ll probably watch this tonight. I love Netflix documentaries. If you’re interested in one about shady corporations profiting from racism in our country & keeping incarceration rates high by paying off our elected officials, the “13th” is a good documentary on Netflix. Even though legal studies, criminal justice, & sociology are my areas of expertise, the film shocked me.. It brought a lot to light about corruption in the prison system and in law-making.

Oprah interviews the woman who made the documentary at the end. It’s a seriously awesome & interesting interview by itself.

I will probably watch that! I actually know from a family member how bad the legal and jail/prison systems can be. It's so sad how rights are violate and that racism is still an issue. Hopefully future generations will improve on this.
& I debated turning off comments but I feel like we are all adults so hopefully I won't need to! I didn't say anything negative so I feel like people can move on or debate in a post they create themselves if the want.

@babybue16, That’s true. I see people make new posts about existing posts all the time. I’m sure they’d do just that if they saw you said “no debates please” but who knows! & It’s horrible! Tell me how 1 in 3 black men in America will be incarcerated in their life time but 1 in 17 white men... that’s a startling disparity. Or how about the fact that 97% of people incarcerated right now didn’t even stand trial.. they made deals for lesser sentences.. whether or not they committed the crime.

@mrs.mcdreamy yeah, that is ridiculous. Again, hopefully we will improve things for future generations. It is definitely needed! I am white so I can't even begin to completely understand and I will not pretend to. However, I do know how it feels for a loved one to be in jail without even a bail hearing for almost a year and be so unfairly treated because of the systems perception of him based on his appearance. Also, this person did settle for something he didn't do just to be able to be transferred and get a bail hearing for the thing he did do to protect someone else. It is so sad. I can only imagine how it is like for someone of color. It's not ok. And the conditions of our jails are not acceptable. And the fear for the prisoners safety while in the inside is a serious concern.
