Hey moms, I’m having some breastfeeding issues. My newborn did really well at the hospital but had a doctors appointment to test for jaundice where they discovered she was also loosing weight. They suggested that I do supplement formula bottle feeds to get her weight up. I also started giving her a pacifier the second night at the hospital(I read later that I should have waited a month or so to introduce that to her if I was going to breast feed) anyways now she won’t even latch on and I really wanted to breastfeed...any suggestions? If I try to just pump and bottle feed will I still produce enough milk?
🙌🏾 thank you soo much! I needed this encouragement. How long do I have before milk drys up? I was going to substitute the pumping so I could try and avoid that.. and thank God she’s no longer in the range for jaundice
If you’re struggling then pumping could be a good idea. You just have to find out what works best for you. A fed baby is best!
Have you tried a nipple shield? I found out I have inverted nipples so I had to (and still use) a nipple shield. You can get them at Wal Mart. I supplemented after feedings to ensure she was getting enough due to jaundice too. Supplements after BFing won't hurt your chances of being able to. Don't give up!
I’m going to try that! It’s way harder than I imagined so I’m getting a little discouraged. Thank you for your advice
I gave both of my babies a paci on the first day and successfully breastfed both so it can be done. Just offer breast at every single peep and try to only give paci for naps/bedtime to minimize the risk of nipple confusion. Be careful pumping so early in the game too..it can cause an oversupply which can be a hassle. Practice makes perfect. She’s just as new as you when it comes to breastfeeding so she will get the hang of it but nursing on demand will regulate your supply so that pumping won’t be necessary and will give her the practice she needs to perfect her latch. You’re doing great mama!
For jaundice it helps to sit baby in direct sunshine for a little while during the day 😘
