Will the home midwife be upset with me?
Will the home midwife be upset with me?
I really wanted to breastfeed my baby boy but it’s been a lot tougher than I thought. The other night he was constantly hungry and wanting to feed but he didn’t seem satisfied after I fed him😕 I started to get really worried I’m not making enough for him. I got desperate and gave him formula. He finally seemed satisfied and happy after a bottle and I’ve been giving him bottles of formula ever since. My home midwife is coming out tomorrow morning for her last visit and I’m scared to tell her that I’ve switched to formula😕 I already feel like a failure. I just don’t want her to make me feel even worse than I already do😔

She won’t be annoyed at you. She’ll probably explain a bit about cluster feeding etc. It’s really normal for newborns to constantly want the boob in the first few weeks until your supply establishes. If you think you might want to keep trying to breastfeed then keep offering him the breast, but if you want to switch to formula that’s 100% your choice.

Yeah he lost weight at first but then went back to his birth weight a few days later. He does have wet and dirty nappies too. I think that’s what has made me continue to give him formula as I can actually see what he’s getting and it puts my mind at ease. I think I might speak to her about maybe combination feeding xx

definitely speak to her. Hand on heart I had all of these exact same fears, it’s really natural to worry that you’re just bit doing it right. However you go forward though, don’t feel pressured by anyone especially your midwife. She should help you not hinder you.

Your baby your decision the HV is there to support you not judge you.Xx

She shouldn't make you feel bad if she does chuck her out! She should be there to support you and help you. Remember it's your choice anyway!

Yeah I know I have to remember it’s my choice. It’s just they’re always promoting breast feeding and it makes me think they’ll judge me for switching😭

First of all you are no where near a failure you done what was best at the time, he’s your baby and no one will be annoyed or anything with you, having a newborn is very difficult without the added pressure of breastfeeding x

Thank you💕 Using the formula deffo felt like a huge pressure had been lifted from me xx

Not doing her job if she tells you off. Happy Mum happy baby, they promote breast saying it’s best because that’s what they are told to say. You’re not a failure breast feeding is hard and sounds like you tried your best with it
