Anyone have any children that is autistic or has some form of autism? Can you give me some advice on how to talk to my son and things to help him understand things. Any advice is helpful. He has a hearing appointment scheduled for Wednesday and then we'll get him started with speech therapy. He hasn't officially been diagnosed as autistic but we are pretty positive that he is. My sons pediatrician says she believes he's going to be diagnosed as being high functioning autistic. Any advice is helpful. Thank you

I have only worked with autistic adults but the ones I have worked with seem to enjoy and benefit from some stimulation besides conversation to focus on (seemed to help him or her focus on speech) like something to hold or look at. You may go two routes with this. You may want to teach your child to focus on communication without that secondary stimulation so that he doesn't rely on it as a crutch in the future or you may want to provide him with a secondary stimulation to help him focus on communication. Just a reflection on the work I've had experience with.
