Any mommas have babies with jaundice? My son was born oct 21st. 10 days before his due date and was told his bilirubin levels were high. After getting discharged he was readmitted for his levels which went down with phototherapy and now his levels are a little higher than when he was 2 days old. And im sad that i was asked to stop breastfeeding him to see if his levels of bilirubin go down. Any one gone through this before?

Hopefully they are letting you pump and bottle feed. Both my girls were early and had jaundice. One got 5 days in the hospital and one was in the nicu for other reasons but also got the lights. Both times, I was pumping and bottle feeding after breastfeeding. My first had eating problems but my second breastfed like her life depended on it and then took another ounce or two from the bottle.

It is important to make sure they are eating well, but breastmilk should still be a pretty good option if you’re making enough.

Is the baby nursing enough? Have they done a weighted feed? Breastfeeding and then topping up with breast milk or formula should also help out too. An Supplemental nursing system (sns) May also help encourage baby to eat more to pass the bilirubin.

Jaundice isn’t anything to play around with, but neither is your breastfeeding (if you want to keep going)

@eaco1993, I tried but would only get about an ounce from each breast and lost the motivation to pump

@eaco1993 hmm are they concerned about your production? It's odd that they won't let you do both at least so that it doesn't affect your supply. I really hope that it gets better soon, I have a Dr appointment on Monday to see if my little man is improving and if not then he'll go under the lights.
I think he looks better, his face isn't quite as yellow and the whites of his eyes are almost back to normal.

They asked you to stop breastfeeding? My son was born Oct 21 as well and his jaundice levels went up a bit after birth. My doctor sent us for lab work and told me to make sure to breastfeed him more often. Even if it meant waking him up to feed. That the jaundice fixes itself when the baby is well hydrated (something about peeing out the bilirubin) Why did they suggest you stop?

They kept our daughter under the light constantly for 2 days I believe but her levels were not high. So they caught it right when it began. She hasn't had any issues after they released her.

My daughter was born at 37+4 and she was jaundiced and losing a bit of weight. I started supplementing with formula around 2 weeks postpartum and that helped tremendously. I never had a good milk supply and supplemented throughout her first year. She’s still nursing.
