Hello mommys im starting to worry about my babys weight she'll be 3 wks tomorrow and is weighing 7lbs 13oz . 2 weeks ago she was 7lbs 11oz . So in 2 weeks she only gained 2 oz but since birth 10oz . The doctor said i might not be producing enough milk ( Im breastfeeding only) and wants to weigh her again in 1 wk and if she hasn't gained more we have to do formula which i absolutely don't wannt 😭 but then baby wants to be on the breast all the time and i can her big o gulps and plus there always stains of milk she lets out while feeding. But now im worried she really isnt getting enough ☹ any advice ladies ?

Just be consistent. I used the Sprout app to track his feedings, and diapers. I would set an alarm every 2 hours to get up to feed him to make him have closer to 12 good feeds, then the minimum 8.
Mine was born 7 pounds 7oz, and dropped down to 6pounds 12 oz so he was at a 9% loss in weight, and if it didn’t get better in a couple of days I was facing the same thing. So that’s what I did. I would change his diaper before feeding even if he didn’t need it to wake him so he would feed well, and feed every 2 hours. In 3 days he was 7 pounds 4 oz.

Is she having enough wet diapers? She should have a minimum of 6 a day. Any less and that's definitely a sign of her not getting enough. Sometimes breastfed babies gain weight slower. As long as she's gaining there's really no need to supplement. Pediatricians are always quick to push formula. Make sure to feed as much as possible. Any time she wants to nurse, let her. Even if she just fed.

Pediatricians are always quick to jump to formula because they get sponsored by companies that’s why they’ll tell you to go to similac or enfamil when you can get the exact same formula that’s bargain brand. My best advice is going to a lactation consultant and have a weighted feed. They’ll be able to tell you if she’s getting enough.
Your milk also may not have that much fat in it so you can always up your healthy fats in your own diet

Aw i hope that happens in this week with us too! The thing is shes basically feeding all day. I track the time she starts and then just put how many minutes she lasted .. only like 2 or 3 times in 24hr she'll sleep for 2-4 hrs the rest its like we only have 5 min breaks in between feeding.

@penelope127 this is what its like this was yesterday. The first 2 weeks it was even more

@arri0910, for us, I was told I could only count quality feeds as anything 20-45 minutes long. Is there anyway you could try to make some of them longer? Maybe even switch boobs?
That’s where I ran into trouble too. I was told if he didn’t eat to put some breastmilk drops on his lips. I was counting that as a feed, but technically it wasn’t a quality feed, so I couldn’t count them. I ended up only have 6 quality feeds, and short the 8 minimum.

@leahkay yes she has a lot diapers i havent kept count but i know im changing it at least those 6 times does poop count also ? Its new to me cause almost everytime i change she has poop , and my first child would only go once a day

@arri0910, did your hospital offer a lactation consultant? They helped me so much, and I loved they advocating breastfeeding instead of jumping right away to formula. If he still hadn’t gained weight for his checkup, they would have had me pump to measure out the ozs, and feed him with a bottle that way.

@parkers_mommy thankyou! I did not think about a consultant . Would i have to get referred by the pediatrician? Yes i probably dont have a good diet!

@penelope127 she will fall asleep right when she's done with one side .. i really dont get many feeds longer than 20 minutes when i do i just think shes sucking for comfort or sleep rather than eating. With my first she wouldnt go over 10 mintues . So thats why i didnt think of the time being to little . And no they didnt offer a lactation consultant one usually shows up but this time i didnt see anyone. Where should I ask to be referred to one?
Penelope ·
@arri0910, call the labor and delivery at your hospital. See if they offer one. Mine is right in the labor and delivery, and her office is in an education center.
What has worked for me to get the feedings longer is make her uncomfortable. Change her diaper, and undress her. If she’s cold, she can’t fall asleep.

@penelope127 ok im going to wait til her next appt and see how it goes if he wants me to do formula I will ask for a lactation consultant. Thank you so much !I kind of wanted to go crazy when i saw it was only 2 oz in 2 weeks and when dr told me it wasn't ok. I will try undressing her !

@arri0910, yes skin to skin helps. If you have any questions feel free to message me. I’m not an expert by any means, but I’ve gone through a similar situation.

@penelope127 thank you so much, I sure will.
