Help!! So my son has been having night terrors for about 2 weeks now EVERY night and periodically through the night at that. It’s to the point where we can’t do anything to calm him. He’s almost 2.. I don’t know if it’s something that just happens? We haven’t done anything to set this on.. we as parents don’t argue and aren’t aggressive at all. We handle him calmly at all times.. he’s not in daycare and with me 24/7... He’s in speech therapy and she’s working on his transition tantrums and really tests his limits but I don’t think that’s related at all. The speech therapist thinks it’s related to his absence seizures that have recently become more frequent. We are still waiting on neurology and the pediatrician can’t really do anything.. we’re at wits end with this because we are pretty sleep deprived. He’s to the point where sometimes he’s afraid to go to sleep or won’t sleep unless I’m in the room or I hold him and sing to him. Does anybody know what may be causing this?
@sorcha, he sleeps in our room. We’ve had 2 sleep studies done so I don’t think they will do another. He has central and obstructive sleep apnea. He had his adenoids taken out and will have his tonsils out right when he turns 2.. I hope it’s not because his central apnea is getting worse or something since his obstructive is controlled right now.. i just wish for his sake and our sake this passes because he’s not getting any sleep either. It happens during naps too
@lovelily, we started massaging him with his lavender lotion after his lavender baths but it doesn’t seem to be doing anything. His therapist suggested white noise so I just now turned our humidifier/air purifier on and put lavender and eucalyptus in it. Hopefully it helps.
Neurology will help with treatment and full diagnosis. They will do a sleep study and see what's happening.
For now ride the storm. My friend slept in her daughters room holding her hand all night until they got the sleep study and treatment plan.
I'd say if you want sleep. Adapt if you can. Sleep in his room and reassure him. Document if you can how often and how long it lasts.

@lizibear84, he’s only one. It’s crazy! He becomes really violent when he wakes up from them. He hits or kicks us and throws himself around his crib and refuses to have a bottle or anything. We can’t just let him hurt himself so we have to hold him. This has never happened before and ever since he’s had his surgeries, he’s been having more absence seizures and these night terrors just started 2 weeks ago. We haven’t gotten any sleep because of it and his dad is in the army and works 16hr shifts most days, starting at 5am. It really sucks
Night terrors are a form of sleep walking. Part of the brain can’t shut down. There’s nothing you can do. But when they happen, you have to let it happen. Don’t wake him up, or even touch him. It can be dangerous for him. But kids shouldn’t remember night terrors. If he’s remembering them, it’s not true night terrors.
Do you give him milk before bed? For some milk can cause that. It happened to my cousins kid and she figured out it happened when she had milk before bed
