My mom does stomach day naps with my newborn. She literally sits at his side by his bassinet and checks his breathing every few minutes because I'm crazy and bug her to keep checking. I personally only do tummy sleeps when he's actually on my chest. Otherwise he sleeps on his back. My first son NEVER ever wanted to sleep on his back. It was soo hard to get him to sleep and then a few seconds to minutes he would wake up screaming. So we caved and allowed him to tummy sleep. I think the magic to getting a baby to sleep soundly on thier back, is to swaddle them! If I swaddled my first son, he would of back slept, but as a first time mom I didn't know any better. 🤷🏽♀️
Okay yes, back is best for sure. My daughter refused to sleep on her back. She would cry within 30 seconds of laying her down. She would actually sleep couple hour stretches so I laid her on her side WITH a breathing monitor that had an alarm if no breathing/movement was detected. It was the only way either of us got sleep. If your baby won’t sleep on their back there are ways to safely position them differently. At about 5 months old when she could roll back and forth, I’d put her down on her back and she’s instantly roll to her tummy. She still wore the monitor until she was 1 because I knew back was best and I was paranoid.

For your newborn? Science says back is best, there’s no opinion to it.

“Back to sleep” is our hospital policy.

I do both. When I'm awake and near I'll do stomach. At night I do back.

Once baby can roll by itself and has good neck control it can sleep in whatever position is most comfortable, but starting on back is recommended.
