Any mommas ever suffer from being highly anemic while pregnant? My doctor set me up an appointment with a specialist because she’s seems to really be worried about me losing too much blood when I have the baby.
My level is supposed to be at a 10 or above and they are 4.5 as of now. They’ve actually dropped since taking my prescription iron pills.

I’m not severely anemic but I was having shortness of breath which prompted my doctor to test me for it. Since taking iron pills it has gotten better. I was also anemic during my first pregnancy. I have a vegetarian diet and cook with an iron skillet but for some reason I still don’t get enough iron. @micgennyy,

Mine dropped to 5 after delivering my son and I had to have a blood transfusion. I was basically the walking dead at 5. I’m surprised you weren’t admitted.

@cams, I’m 36 weeks and I tried the iron pills but they actually made my iron drop which concerned my doctor. She set me up an appointment with a specialist for an iron shot, as many as I can get in before the 15th of next month. But she said if I have this baby before then she already has the blood transfusion set up because I will definitely need it. It just all makes me nervous. Can you tell me more about your experience?

@micgennyy, sounds like you need some iron infusions, ASAP. I went in to deliver my first at a 12. I had a traumatic vaginal delivery and hemorrhaged. Levels dropped to 5 so they basically said you need two units of blood or we can’t discharge you.
On my second, I went in at a 13 and after my c section i dropped to a 7. They said it was my choice if i wanted a transfusion. I refused even though i would have felt better a lot faster.
This time I’m anemic during pregnancy. Not bad though. I’m at a 9. So I take iron 3 times a day. So far it seems to be helping. I’m not looking forward to delivery since I’m sure I’ll bleed a lot again. 🤦🏻♀️

@withlovedkj, I told my doc about exhaustion and shortness of breath as well. I was referred to a cardiologist just in case. So now I’m scheduled for a litany of tests. 😖

@micgennyy, also - the American Red Cross has something called a direct donation if you don’t want random blood and want a family member instead. Insurance doesn’t cover it, you’ll have to pay out of pocket. Just a thought.

@cams, I hope everything goes well with your tests and that you don’t have any excessive bleeding during delivery. I had to take an EKG but haven’t gotten the results. I hopeful that no concerning results will be present.
