Recently my son has been commenting on my skin color saying I'm black and he's brown. I know it shouldn't hurt my feelings because of his age but I don't understand where this comparison of color is coming from. We don't comment on people's skin color because it shouldn't matter. I don't know how to talk to him about it besides saying color doesn't matter. I shouldn't feel hurt in my own house because of my color. I was bullied about it all through school so I already have a complex about it. Long rant, just need advice

I think it’s the age. They are just starting to notice. My 4 year old has done the same thing. I just say yes everyone is different colors and that’s ok. Just explain it’s part of what makes use unique and that what’s on the inside is all that matters. I’m sure he will stop pointing it out. I’m sorry you were bullied for you skin color.

My LO has also noticed and likes to point out our skin color differences I don’t think she means anything by it but she likes to say “mommy I’m brown and your white, & daddy is black”.

@bigmama18 thank you. I'll try these words. I've come to love my color just don't like the way he points it out. It sounds so mean.

@alyboo102293 maybe it's my hormones. If other kids do it I'll try to have a thicker skin about it

When one of my brother’s was about this age, I referred to him as my brother, and he said, “I’m not your real brother. I’m just your half brother.” Talk about a busted soul. He was the one I was closest to. Technically he was right, but it didn’t make it any less hurtful to hear. I had to remind myself that he was just young. They’re SO literal at that age. I promise you, all he does is look at you and see his beautiful mother.
For what it’s worth, your skin tone is gorgeous. ❤️

@serrano_girl, I understand. It’s hard when they point out things. I’m sure he isn’t trying to hurt your feelings. You can be honest with him too. Tell him mommy used to get made fun of for having a dark complexion. It hurts your feelings when he does it. I’m sure he will stop. Use it as a segway to have the discussion about bullying and why it wrong.

@bigmama18 @gingiej1207 @sherrynygirl thank you. I'm talking to him about it now. Absolutely time to start talking about bullying and how it's wrong. He did say he was joking, which I followed up with it's not a joke to hurt someone's feelings. You all are right he didn't mean to hurt my feelings and said he loved me the most. Hopefully he'll stop
