When does the doctor normally start checking you to see if you have started dilating?
@heather3427 his family is huge...and they all have "claimed rights to visit" 😣 Being a foster kid I don't have any so it makes it that much harder too.
@heilwife317, right I don’t want a bunch of people there! It will just be my mom and her boyfriend and then my hubbys mom!
@heather3427 haha we do too. I think they intentionally don't want lots of guests waiting though. The regular floor downstairs has a huge waiting room. The l&d floor has one smaller than my room. Lol I don't mind at all since I don't want a bunch of people at once anyway. :)
@heilwife317, oh we have a L&D floor so they have a decent sized waiting room!!
@heather3427 our hospital doesn't have much of a waiting room anyway and if we let everyone wait that wants to the hospital would not be happy. The waiting room is really meant for people waiting to be admitted.
@heilwife317, right!!! I get it! It’s only gonna be me and my hubby in there! But they know where I stand at as far as delivery goes! They are more than welcome to be At the hospital but no one will be seeing him until I’m ready for them to!
@heather3427 I hope it eases up, I made it very clear we needed our space so finally they don't come over, she just texts me, likes, comments, and messages me on Facebook constantly asking if he is here yet or if today is the day. She's upset because I said she can't be in the room when we deliver (she literally said she didn't want to be there for me but to support her son...ugh no) so we decided we aren't even telling them until after he is born because she would want constant text updates and we want the moment to ourselves so of course she keeps going to everyone acting like we are hurting her by making her wait "to see her baby" as she says. Nope dude my baby!
@heilwife317, I get it completely! I put my foot down with my mom and them and they didn’t even try this go around!
@heather3427 good call! I will definitely do the same. I made all the family and friends get the Tdap too....1 family member can't and he lives with my in laws so I said we won't be having my baby over there until after all his shots are in effect. I don't want him sick because of the family member no matter what. Thankfully hubby agrees despite his parents being all "we can't wait for him to be born so we can take him everywhere" his mom said she needs a $200 stroller so she can take him for walks...they live 3 minutes from us, no were good thanks. And she wants to do a room in her house as his room and I again was like that is completely unnecessary. They bought the house 2 doors over (in a court from us) and have their daughter living there (I think that was just the excuse for buying temporarily) because then they plan on moving into it next fall....right next door!! I am already going crazy protective I want my own space and my son on them! Lol
@heilwife317, I carried a travel bottle in the diaper bag and I plan to do the same this time too!! People can be filthy!!!
@heather3427 yeah...I feel like that will be me, especially since we are having him during the winter sicky months!
@heilwife317, you will be fine!! I was the same way with my daughter!!! I was so scared I’d hurt her! But babies are amazing !!!! Your mothers instinct will kick in I promise!!! Girl with my daughter I carried germx and made people wash their hands before they even touched her! I was so picky!
@heather3427 this is our first, also a boy. I was a foster kid so I have lots of baby experience in that way, hubby has pretty little, and we are having the first little of the family. So I get the excitement but also so many nerves. I am not worried about labor...more about when I bring him home and I have to care for and protect this tiny fragile life!
@heilwife317, I am starting to get excited and nervous! First boy and it’s been 6 years since I’ve had a baby baby around!
@heather3427 that's awesome. And true I guess labor would be the ultimate test. Hopefully yours goes smoothly! :) I am getting impatient for ours now. Lol
@heilwife317, so far he has been great!! The delivery is the ultimate test though! Lol! I love all his staff too! They are pretty good too. They keep me informed as far as all test even if there is no concerns
@heather3427 aww. That's awesome. It's hard to see one go like that I'm sure then. I'm sure this one will be great for you too it sounds like. :)
@heilwife317, my first was a male and I had a very good experience with him!! I loved him!!! I was 18 when I gave my birth to my daughter so he made sure I was comfortable and knew everything he was doing every step of the way before he done anything!! Answered all my questions and listened me to any time I had any concerns! I was very thankful for him!!!
@heather3427 wow! Yeah that wouldn't have been good. We found out at 5 too but they waited to have us come in until 8 for our 1st check, which wasn't too bad of a wait. Thankfully my OB was my regular gyn first. I hate searching for doctors, and to find a comfortable fit is rough. I'm glad you found someone you like in the end. That is most important. Because I have a trauma history my OB is willing to come deliver my baby if I go into labor over the weekend and the male is on call as I can't handle males. I am so grateful for her for sure! :)
@heilwife317, good!! My other OB I had before retired :( so I had to find a new one and all that mess! I wanted the female in the office she is amazing but she had no appointments till almost April! And I found out I was pregnant at like 4-5 weeks! Like he did a transvaginal ultrasound and u couldn’t even see a baby yet...just the sac
@heather3427 heehee not old then I would say. Lol mine has been practicing for 20 years (exact this year) and is in her late 40s to early 50s I would guess but she is all research all up to date with change type of doctor, since I am in the mental health field and have to do the same it is nice to have one who is constantly up to date with what is seen as best for me and baby now. :) she has been amazing for me.
@heilwife317, yeah he’s definitely an old school doctor for sure! But he isn’t like old old lol he’s maybe in his 50s but like u said it just changed within the last 5 years so.
@heather3427 he sounds a little old school, between cervical checks and inducing before 39. So that might be a big part of it. 39 only became full term in the past like 5 years (can't remember exactly) but before it was 37 so that's why he is saying 38.
@heather3427 dang. There you go. We don't do anything before 39 weeks since full term is at 39. Now I'm 40+1 But we are waiting to try anything until 41. :)
@heilwife317, I know!!! He said he is gonna strip my membranes at 38 weeks like we did with my daughter! After we done that I had her 48 hours later!
@heilwife317, okay! Well I don’t have any of that! I almost failed my sugar test it was 136 but he just told me to watch my sugar intake! And I’ve had a lot of swelling in my legs and ankles he is watching carefully! Baby is healthy and fine and my BP has been great!
@heather3427 I have been measuring nearly 3 weeks (about 2.5 ahead the entire time as well). That's not a reason for early checks. My ob said some common reasons would be you have pre-e, GD, extremes in bp, baby bpm is difficult to find or all over the place, or baby movements are off.
@mummaof2 Agreed!
I didn't get checked at all until yesterday at my 40 week appointment. I go back at 41 and will be checked and discuss being induced if I don't go into spontaneous labor before the 17th (which would be 3 days shy of 42 weeks).
Checks seem very unnecessary and even my OB said they are outdated. They are only necessary if you think something is wrong so if you are measuring on track and everything is ok then they aren't needed and sometimes can actually cause you to go into labor sooner due to the possibility of them causing contractions.
My old clinic started at 38 weeks. My new clinic starts at 36 weeks. I've been getting checked on and off since 20 weeks though due to concerns.
@lifewithlynnieandwill88, thank u! He didn’t check me at my last appointment and the was my 30 week appointment! I got back September 18th so I’ll call ahead of time to see if they can tell me anything
@lincolnsmommy18, I just don’t feel like I’m gonna make it to my due date at all!
@lincolnsmommy18, thank you. He also mentioned stripping my membranes at 38 weeks like we did with my daughter!
@heather3427, I’d say if he mentions it , then it will be around 36 weeks.
@lincolnsmommy18, my doctor has mentioned checking me but hasn’t said exactly when! So I’m just curious but I’ll ask him at my next appointment!
But normally I think they check you the first time at 36 weeks when they do the Group b strep test.
I got checked at 34 weeks because of bleeding. But declined at my last appointment. I’ll get checked at my 36 week appointment Tuesday but after that I will probably decline until 39 weeks. It’s not really necessary because it can open the door for infection. And dilation can change so fast or you can be stuck for so long.
@heilwife317, your baby, your day!
